YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University rowing team began its spring season at the Cooper Invitational Sunday, April 8. There, the Eagles brought home two third-place finishes and a fourth-place finish.
"The 1V raced really well in the morning, but we have to address a few issues that popped up in the second race with our race plan." EMU Head Coach Kemp Savage said. "The 2V raced hard, they are still missing some smoothness they need to get a little faster. They improved in the second race, but they are still inconsistent. In the four, it was the first collegiate race for most of them. They gained some good racing experience and maturity."
EMU's day began with preliminary races, where the Green and White earned two spots in the Petite Finals and one slot in the Grand Finals. After posting besting a boat from Fordham by more than 20 seconds to post the fifth-best Varsity 4+ time, Eastern's second Varsity 8+ finished fourth with a time of 7:55.21.
In its final preliminary race of the day, Easter Michigan came out on top, clocking in with a time of 7:19.88 to win the second heat of the Varsity 8+. EMU's time was more than two seconds ahead of second-ranked Bucknell and represented the second-best prelims time overall.
EMU claimed a pair of third-place finishes in its Petite Final races. The Green and White dropped nearly five seconds from its morning time to take third with a mark of 9:02.55, finishing more than 10 seconds ahead of the fourth-place finisher. After that, the Eagles finished just behind Dayton in the 2V8+ with a time of 7:55.59.
Competing in the final race of the regatta, Eastern held off Duquesne and Villanova for a fourth-place finish in the Varsity 8+ Grand Final with a time of 7:18.07.
"The first race was smooth and exciting," junior Sarah Anderson (Cleveland, Ohio-Charles F. Brush) added. "Our boat was even with Bucknell and Villanova for the first half and then we pulled away with a fast finish. Our second race was faster with better conditions, but not our best. We are looking forward to building up our speed in the coming weeks."
Eastern Michigan is back in action Sunday, April 22, at the George Mason Invitational in Fairfax, Va.
