EMU closes out the home portion of the schedule Wednesday, May 2, versus Oakland
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team was swept by Ball State University in Mid-American Conference action Saturday, April 28, at Varsity Field. A slim lead slipped away in game one as the Eagles fell 8-1, before dropping the night cap, 9-1.
Game #1: Ball State 8, Eastern Michigan 1
Freshman Sophia Holland (Lugoff, S.C.-Lugoff-Elgin) tallied two of EMU's six hits in a 2-for-4 effort, while sophomore Arielle Anderson (Marion, Ohio-Pleasant) added Eastern's lone RBI in a 1-for-2 showing.
Kiara Hurley (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) went a split 5.1 innings with three strikeouts, yielding just one unearned run. Senior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) tossed the other 1.2 innings, with two strikeouts, but was sacked with the loss. Trujillo allowed just four hits, but was tagged for seven runs, only two of which were earned.
Ball State threatened right away, using a single, a walk, and a hit by pitch to load the bases with one out in the first inning, but Hurley worked her way out of the jam unscathed.
After stranding a two-out walk, Hurley tossed a 1-2-3 second to bring the Eagles back to the plate. Holland singled to get EMU going and quickly moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore Ariana Chretien (Commerce, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern Commerce) followed suit, singling up the middle to put runners on the corners, before a walk loaded the bases for Anderson. Battling at the plate, Anderson won a seven-pitch at bat, earning an RBI walk to give EMU a 1-0 lead into the third.
The Cardinals tied things up, 1-1, in the third, adding a run via a bases loaded walk.
Eastern Michigan ran into trouble in the fourth, as Ball State loaded the bases for the third time in four innings. BSU erupted for seven runs on four hits, an error, and a pair of walks. The breakthrough inning for Ball State gave the Cardinals a commanding 8-1 edge through three and a half.
The Green and White put two on in both the fourth and fifth innings, but both of EMU's two-out rallies were thwarted to maintain Ball State's 8-1 lead into the sixth.
After Hurley struck out the side, the Eagles put runners aboard but could not capitalize, sealing an 8-1 defeat.
Game #2: Ball State 9, Eastern Michigan 1
Junior Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) went 2-for-2 at the plate for her 12th multi-hit game of the season. Meanwhile, Holland recorded an RBI in a 1-for-2 effort.
Eastern Michigan could not overcome Ball State's high-octane offense in the night cap. The Cardinals jumped out in front 3-0 in the first, before doubling their lead with three more in the second. Ball State then tacked on one in the third and two in the fourth to take control, 9-0, with EMU coming to bat.
The Eagles broke the shutout up in the bottom of the fourth as Akles started a two-out rally with a double to the fence in center. After a wild pitch allowed Akles to scoot into third, Holland poked an RBI single to left.
Holland's RBI rip was the lone run EMU mustered, as the Eagles dropped the game, 9-1, in five innings.
Eastern Michigan closes out the non-conference and home portion of its schedule Wednesday, May 2, when EMU hosts Oakland University for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
