EMU Drops Series Opener to BSU

The Eagles and Cardinals close out the series tomorrow, April 28, at 1 p.m.
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University softball team came up short, 5-0, in it's series opener against Ball State University at Varsity Field Friday afternoon, April 27.
Senior Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) 1-for-2 at the plate, with a hit by pitch, to pace EMU.
In the circle, junior Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) moved into eighth in the EMU record books for career innings pitched. Going 5.2 frames, Miranda gave up six hits, while striking out three to and upping her career IP total to 428.2, surpassing Aimee Woodrum. Senior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) was stout in relief striking out two over 1.1 innings without yielding a baserunner.
Neither team registered a hit through the first three innings, but a pair of walks and am error allowed Ball State to get in front,1-0, on a sac fly early.
Ball State extended it's lead in the fourth with two runs on two hits. After a single, BSU belted a homer to center to take a 3-0 edge into the fifth.
The Cardinals tacked on two more in the sixth to push their advantage to five before EMU threatened in the sixth, putting two on with two outs. Freshman Casey Skeens (Poca, W. Va.-Poca) reached via error and Hostetler singled, but a strikeout stalled the threat.
After a clean seventh from Trujillo, the Eagles could not solve Ball State's relief pitcher, ultimately going down in order to end the game.
The series continues tomorrow as Eastern Michigan and Ball State return to Varsity Field for a twin bill. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
