YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University softball team was swept in Mid-American Conference action against Northern Illinois University Saturday, April 21, at Varsity Field. The Eagles (9-32, 5-12 MAC) were run-ruled in six innings in the first game, 9-1, before the Huskies (17-26, 8-8 MAC) came from behind to top EMU, 4-3, in the night cap.

Game 1: Eastern Michigan 1, Northern Illinois 9 (6 innings)

Junior Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) finished the game 2-for-3 with a double and a single, accounting for two of EMU's five hits. With her two-hit effort, Akles picked up her 11th multi-hit game of the season.

The Eagles played the game without the services of Brandice Olmos and Angel Schilke due to graduation. With that, senior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) pitched in relief, while also serving as the Eagles' DP. In the circle, Trujillo split duties with junior Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) as each pitched three innings with three and two strikeouts, respectively. At the plate, Trujillo registered the first hit of her career, a double to center, in a 1-for-2 day.

The Huskies scored in three of the first five frames to take control, 6-0, through three and a half innings. NIU scored one in the second and three in the third, before capitalizing on an EMU miscue for two more runs in the fourth.

Eastern Michigan broke into the scoring column in the bottom fourth. After freshman Sophia Holland (Lugoff, S.C.-Lugoff-Elgin) reached via error and Chretien singled, runners were on the corners with one out. Chretien darted towards second with sophomore Arielle Anderson (Marion, Ohio-Pleasant), while Holland slide in safely at home on the double steal to cut NIU's advantage to five, 6-1, into the fifth.

Northern Illinois pushed its lead to eight with a three-run homer to straight-away center field in the top of the sixth, putting EMU's back against the wall.

Trujillo drove a double to the center field fence in the bottom of the sixth, but it was too little too late as EMU fell, 9-1, in six innings.

Game 2: Eastern Michigan 3, Northern Illinois 4

Freshman Kiara Hurley (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) turned in a strong effort in the circle, going 5.2 innings in her 20th appearance of the year. The lefty hurler was tagged for four runs, although just one was earned, while she tallied three strikeouts. Meanwhile, Trujillo was stout in relief, retiring all four batters she faced, including a pair of K's.

A 2-for-3 showing at the plate for senior Haley Hostetler's (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan), including a double and two runs scored, paced the Green and White offense in the nightcap. EMU's other three hits were scattered among three Eagles.

Northern Illinois wasted little time getting on the board in the first frame with a solo home run, but Eastern Michigan responded with two in the second. Making the most of NIU miscues, freshman Casey Skeens (Poca, W. Va.-Poca) came around to score on Hostetler's sac bunt. Then, EMU took the lead on Akles' sacrifice fly to hold a 2-1 edge through one.

The Eagles tacked on another run in the third, getting a run on two hits and an error. After a one-out single by Hostetler, senior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) reached on an error. Then, with two on and two out, sophomore Sam Isaly (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Coffman) ripped an RBI single through the left side to score Hostetler and extend EMU's lead to two, 3-1.

EMU's lead stood into the sixth, where NIU took its first lead of the day. A one-out walk came around to score on an RBI single to pull the Huskies within one, 3-2. Shortly thereafter, Northern Illinois tied the game at three on an EMU error before taking the lead on an RBI double.

After a perfect seventh, the Eagles went to the bat racks one last time. Despite a two-out walk by Akles, a pop out ended a 4-3 defeat for the Eagles.

Eastern Michigan takes a break from Mid-American Conference play to take on in-state foe Michigan State University Tuesday, April 24. First pitch between the Eagles and Spartans is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Secchia Stadium.
