ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — USRowing announced its initial roster of athletes who will represent the United States at this summer's World University Rowing Championships in Shanghai, China, March 30. Eastern Michigan University sophomore rower Amanda Flora (Greenfield, Ind.-Greenfield Central) and EMU assistant coach Delaney McGuire will represent the Eagles on the national stage.
A total of 11 athletes were named to the initial roster, while Flora is one of just two underclassmen selected. The Greenfield, Ind. native came to EMU with no previous rowing experience, but has honed her craft under the guidance of EMU Head Coach and USRowing WUC Head Women's Coach Kemp Savage. Flora, a consistent piece to EMU's Varsity 8 success, helped the Green and White to a Harvey Cup as well as wins at the MACRA Regatta, all while picking up All-CAA honors as a freshman.
McGuire, one of two graduates named to the roster, competed collegiately at Saint Joseph's University. There, the Philadelphia product was a team co-captain and Atlantic 10 First Team All-Conference selection. As a junior, McGuire led SJU to a sweep in the Varsity 8 at the George Washington Invitational and a third-place finish at the A10 Championships. Since graduating from Saint Joseph's, McGuire has served as an assistant coach on Savage's staff at Eastern Michigan. McGuire was a graduate assistant for the Eagles in her first season before being elevated to a full-time assistant coach this past January.
The duo will not have to travel far to train with some of the top rowers in the country as Savage and USRowing will hold camp at EMU's boathouse on Ford Lake in Ypsilanti, May 13-Aug. 12.
