NAPERVILLE, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team will compete at the 2018 Mid-American Conference Championship Friday through Sunday, April 20-22, hosted by Northern Illinois University at Naperville Country Club. The three-day event will consist of 54-holes on the par-72, 6,092-yard course for the 10 MAC schools that sponsor women's golf – Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Toledo, and Western Michigan.
The Eagles enter the tournament with the 13th lowest four-player team scoring average in program history at 313.0. Overall, Eastern Michigan has finished in the top-five at three different tournaments this season, including most recently a fourth-place finish at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational, April 7-8.
Individually, senior Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) leads the team with an average of 77.55, a mark that ranks 27th lowest in school history. Junior Penelope Guilleux (Saint Maur Des Fosse, France-Arsonval) follows Beck closely with a 77.78 season average, while freshman Preaw Sripatrprasite (Bangkok, Thailand-Siam International) has put together a solid season of her own, grabbing an average of 78.96 this year.
Third-year Head Coach Pina Gentile and the Eagles look to spoil Kent State's run at history. The Golden Flashes have won 19 straight league championships, breaking EMU men's swimming & diving team's record for the most consecutive MAC titles in conference history last year.
The Golden Flashes are ranked No. 16 in Golfstat's national rankings followed by Toledo (98), Northern Illinois (135), Akron (144), Ball State (193), Eastern Michigan (194) Western Michigan (195), Bowling Green (199), Ohio (206), and Central Michigan (230).
At last year's MAC Championship, Eastern Michigan tied with Ball State for seventh with a three-day cumulative score of 954 (319-323-312). Beck finished in seventh-place with a three-day score of 228 (75-77-76), while Kelsey Murphy tied for 30th shooting a 240 (82-77-81) across the 54-hole event.
EMU has been the most likely candidate to challenge Kent State for the top spot at the event, as the Eagles' seven runner-up finishes at the MAC Championship since 2003 are the most of any team in the league. The Green and White has placed second in 2003, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015.
Ohio (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005), Ball State (2010, 2012), Toledo (2006, 2014, 2016), Western Michigan (2004), and Northern Illinois (2017) are the only other teams to record a second-place finish in the history of the tournament.
The winner of the 2018 MAC Championship will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA regional round, May 7-9, at one of the four regional locations. The possible sites include Austin, Texas, Madison, Wis., Stanford, Calif., and Tallahassee, Fla. Followed by the NCAA Championships set to be May 18-23 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
The tournament will begin Friday with tee times at 10 a.m. Eastern's lineup will consist of Beck, Sripatrprasite, Guileux, sophomore Julia Stevenson (Milford, Mich.-Milford), and sophomore Maria Connelly (Waterville, Ohio-Anthony Wayne).
Live scoring will be available via Golfstat Live. Unofficial scores will be reported every three holes. The four lowest scores of the team will count each day as a team total. To follow the live scoring at the 2018 MAC Women's Golf Championship, click here.
