The Eagles still have a shot at the MAC Tournament, but must beat the Huskies first
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team finishes the regular season at Mid-American Conference foe Northern Illinois University Friday, April 20. The Eagles and Huskies are set to square off at 10 a.m. CT, and weather permitting, will play on campus at the West Tennis Courts. Should weather force the action inside, the two will play in Rockford, Ill., at the Boylan Tennis Center.
Eastern (15-9, 2-5 MAC) is in a must-win situation this weekend, as its two wins in MAC play have it on the outside looking in at the conference tournament picture. Even with a win, EMU will need help to make the postseason, as Akron, Ball State, and Western Michigan are all currently in front of the Green and White in the standings. The Eagles do, however, hold the head-to-head tiebreak with both Akron and Ball State.
On the court, the senior duo of Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani) and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Pacheco) continue to impress this spring season, as they've reached 19 and 17 wins, respectively. With a win on Friday, Gogvadze could become the first EMU tennis player to reach the 20-win plateau in the dual season since EMU record-keeping began. Barcelo Almoyna, on the other hand, has won 15 consecutive matches and is an eye-popping 13-1 while playing as the Eagles' No. 6 singles player. Fellow senior Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School), as well as junior Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic), and freshman Natalia Regalado (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Pacheco), have also registered double-digit victories this dual season, with 10, 13, and 10 wins respectively for the trio.
Northern Illinois (5-16, 0-7 MAC) has struggled since the beginning of MAC play, going winless against conference opponents and not registering a single win since March 15. The Huskies' closest match in league play was a 5-2 loss at the hands of Western Michigan, while the rest of their defeats have been by 6-1 scores. Sophomore Brodie Walker is the lone NIU player with a winning dual record, coming into Friday's match with a 12-8 mark.
