Pitching Powers EMU to Sweep of CMU

4/13/2018 4:24:00 PM | Softball

The Eagles swept the Chippewas for the first time since 2009

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Strong pitching and a well-balanced offense fueled the Eastern Michigan University softball team to a sweep of Central Michigan University Friday afternoon, April 13, at Varsity Field. EMU (9-29, 5-9 MAC) blanked CMU (18-18, 8-6 MAC) 3-0 in game one, before taking game two, 6-0. It marked the first time the Eagles have swept a doubleheader versus the Chippewas since 2009, while it was the first time EMU has posted back-to-back shutouts since 2016.

Game 1: Eastern Michigan 3, Central Michigan 0
A near-complete game from freshman Kiara Hurley (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) fueled the Eagles to a 3-0 win. Hurley tossed 6.1 innings, allowing just five hits and striking out one, to pick up her second win of the season. She got some help from senior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) in the end, as Trujillo finished out the game to secure the shutout, EMU's first since Nicolle Miranda's complete game shutout against Ball State, April 15, 2017.

Offensively, junior Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) remained on fire at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Led by Akles, the Eagles outhit the Chippewas, 7-5, with five other players registering a hit.

Things got going early as EMU jumped out in front thanks to senior Haley Hostetler's (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) double and an RBI single by Akles in the top of the first.

With Hurley cruising in the circle, Akles doubled EMU's lead with one swing of the bat. Belting her team-leading eighth home run of the season, the La Habra, Calif. Native pushed Eastern's lead to 2-0 midway through the third.

Eastern Michigan added a run in the fourth after a 1-2-3- inning from Hurley. Freshman Lauren Holdsworth (Howell, Mich.-Ladywood) belted a double with one out and fellow freshman Sophia Holland (Lugoff, S.C.-Lugoff Elgin) reached on an error to put two. With runners at second and third after a wild pitch, senior Angel Schilke (Saline, Mich.-Saline) came through with an RBI single to left to extend EMU's edge to 3-0 at the midpoint.

Central Michigan pieced together a few hits in the bottom of the fifth, but Hurley worked out of the jam. After a double and a single put runners on second and third, Hurley induced an inning-ending fly out to left to keep Eastern's 3-0 advantage intact into the sixth.

CMU rallied in its final trip to the plate. Back-to-back singles put runners on the corners with nobody out, and ended a fantastic effort from Hurley as Head Coach Melissa Gentile called Trujillo on from the bullpen. Not messing around, Trujillo finished off Hurley's gem with a fly out and game-ending strikeout to preserve the 3-0 win.

Game 2: Eastern Michigan 6, Central Michigan 0

The Eagles tallied seven hits in the second half of the doubleheader, three of which came courtesy of Casey Skeens (Poca, W. Va.-Poca), who went three-for-four with one run. Akles also continued to display her offensive dominance, ending the game with her ninth homer of the season, while racking up three RBIs and one run, as well as being walked twice.

In the circle Trujillo turned in one of the best performances of her career, going the distance in a four-hit shutout. It was the first shutout of her career and marked the first time EMU has had back-to-back shutouts since 2016.

Eastern Michigan got right back after it in game two, plating a run on two hits and a walk in the top of the first. After Hostetler's double, Akles drew a free pass to put two on with two out for sophomore Sam Isaly (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Coffman). Taking advantage of the opportunity, Isaly came through with a base knock to left, bringing a run across to put EMU in front, 1-0.

Trujillo escaped a jam in the bottom half of the frame, notching a strikeout and a groundout to strand two.

Keeping things rolling, Holdsworth led the second off with a double off the fence in left and tagged up on a fly out. She came around to score on an RBI groundout by sophomore Ariana Chretien (Commerce, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) to give Eastern Michigan a two-run lead through an inning and a half.

EMU's 2-0 lead stood into the fifth, at which point Akles blasted a three-run shot over the fence in right-center. Skeens singled down the first base line and Hostetler walked, bringing the power-hitting Akles to the plate. The junior then sent an 0-1 offering out for her ninth home run of the season to extend the Eagles' lead to 5-0.

Central Michigan looked as though it was going to break into the scoring column in the bottom half of the fifth, but Trujillo had other plans. The Chippewas put two on with two outs, but Trujillo came up with a clutch strikeout to hold off CMU and send the game into the sixth and maintain EMU's 5-0 edge.

The Green and White tacked on an insurance run in the seventh, courtesy of a CMU miscue to make it 6-0 with Central coming to bat one final time.

CMU rallied, putting two on, but Trujillo was up to the task as she induced a game-ending fly out to complete the sweep, 6-0.

Details for the final game of the series are still to be determined with inclement weather in the forecast.
