The Eagles will honor their five seniors at the Toledo match before hosting Tiffin Friday night
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University tennis team wraps up the home portion of the 2018 spring season with a pair of matches at the Chippewa Racquet Club Friday, April 13. The Eagles will hold its Senior Day ceremony honoring their five seniors at the 1 p.m. match against the University of Toledo, and then play again against Tiffin University at 6 p.m.
Eastern (14-8, 2-4 MAC) had a tough weekend last time out, falling in all three of its matches including two in Mid-American Conference play. The Eagles are now in a must-win situation in order to make the conference tournament, as they currently sit in seventh place in the conference and only the top six make the postseason. EMU has five players with double-digit wins on the season, with seniors Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani) and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Pacheco) pacing the Green and White with 17 and 16 wins, respectively.
Toledo (13-5, 3-2 MAC) has been on a hot streak of late, winning its last three matches (all in MAC play), and six of its last eight. Junior Kokoro Chishaki leads UT with 13 wins, collecting five at No. 5 singles and seven more at No. 6. Sophomore Deedee Leenabanchong has seen time at No. 1, 2, and 3 singles, winning three matches at each spot, while also collecting two more at No. 4 for a total of 11 wins. On the doubles side, Leenabanchong has teamed with senior Colleen O'Brien to go a perfect 14-0 on the season playing at No. 2 and 3. Eastern last defeated Toledo April 10, 2015.
The home season wraps up with the final NCAA Division II team on the schedule, as Tiffin (13-11, 6-4 GLIAC) comes to town Friday night. The Dragons are another member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and are playing their final match of the season as the GLIAC holds its tennis championship season in the fall. Freshman Anais Geslin is an impressive 20-4 on the season, going undefeated at No. 6 singles with a 7-0 mark. Tiffin's other top player is fellow freshman Juliette Sirgant, who is 19-3 on the campaign and 11-1 at No. 5 singles.
