Eastern pounded out three home runs in the first game to lift it to a 10-9 win
Game #1: Eastern Michigan 10, Toledo 9
At the dish, eight Eagles pieced together a team season-high 14 hits, the most since Eastern mustered 15 against Ball State, April 16, 2016. Junior Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra), and freshmen Lauren Holdsworth (Howell, Mich.-Ladywood) and Sophia Holland (Lugoff, S.C.-Lugoff Elgin) had outstanding days as they each recorded two hits, including one home run apiece. Their round-trippers is the third time Eastern has blasted multiple home runs this season and the first time the team produced three dingers since the 2017 campaign when EMU knocked off Mercer, 3-2.
Leading off in the first, freshman Casey Skeens (Poca,W. Va.-Poca) ripped a single to left before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Entering the game with a three-game home run streak, Akles registered her seventh dinger of the season, clearing the bases and giving EMU an early 2-0 lead.
The Rockets cut into Eastern's lead in the bottom of the frame with a single run, before tying the game in the third with an RBI-single up the middle.
Eastern responded to Toledo's run in the fourth, with a six-run fourth inning. Holdsworth got things started by blasting a homer out of the park on the opening pitch, the second of her career and first since starting conference play. The Eagles quickly loaded the bases with a pair of singles and hit by pitch, before Skeens recorded her first RBI of the campaign with a single to second. A pair of back-to-back walks pushed Eastern's lead to four, before a two-run double to center by senior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) provided the Green and White with the 8-2 advantage.
In the top of the sixth, the Eagles used another Olmos RBI-hit to push their lead to seven, the largest EMU would see all afternoon.
After Toledo took advantage of a passed ball to get itself within six of Eastern in the bottom of the frame, Holland pushed the lead back up seven with her second dinger of the season in the seventh.
The Rockets attempted a late-seventh inning comeback when they plated six runs on four hits. With two on and two outs, freshman Kiara Hurley (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) got the call from the bullpen to enter the game in relief. Hurley got right to work and got Eastern it's needed third out, picking up her and Eastern's first save of the season with the 10-9 win.
On the mound, junior Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) earned the starting nod and ultimately picked up the win as she moves to 3-15 on the year. Tossing 5.1 innings, Miranda gave up seven hits and nine runs, two of which were earned, while fanning five. Senior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) made an appearance at relief, going 1.1 innings of one-hit ball, striking out two. Hurley picked up her and Eastern's first save of the season in the win.
Game #2: Eastern Michigan 6, Toledo 12
Eastern's offense could not solve Toledo's Kailey Minarchick, as the Eagles were outhit, 16-8, in an error filled game that features a combined five miscues.
The Rockets got right to work in the opening frame, plating three, before adding another run in the second for an early 4-0 advantage over the Green and White.
A leadoff single by Olmos set the table for a two-run inning for the Eagles in the bottom of the second. With a runner in scoring position, Holdsworth smacked an RBI-single to left center, allowing junior Alex Peters (Oscoda, Mich.-Alpena) to round third for home, getting Eastern on the board. Three batters later, a Toledo second-base error would allow EMU to plate another runner, getting Eastern within two.
After Toledo tallied another run in the third, senior Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) got the Green and White started in the bottom with a single down the left line before advancing to second on a throwing error. Haley would slide into home thanks to a squeeze bunt off the bat of sophomore Sam Isaly (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Coffman). Holdsworth followed right up with an RBI-double, cutting EMU's deficit to one, 5-4.
The Rockets used a three-run home run in the fourth followed by an RBI-double in the fifth to extend their lead to five over the Eagles.
Isaly turned in her third RBI of the season in the bottom of the fifth to cut into Toledo's lead, 9-5.
The Rockets put the game out of reach in the sixth and seventh, pushing their run total to 12 with three runs on as many hits.
Eastern attempted a late-inning rally after Hostetler started the seventh by reaching on an error before moving to third on a passed ball. The New Haven, Ind. native tied a career-high three runs after she came home off a sac-fly by Akles. That would be as close as the Eagles would get, however, as Toledo finalized the defeat with a fly out.
The Green and White return to action this weekend, April 13-14, when it travels to Mount Pleasant, Mich. to take on the Central Michigan Chippewas. First pitch on Friday is slated for 3 p.m.
