Student-athletes networked with potential employers

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University Office of Student-Athlete Support Services held its inaugural Student-Athlete Career Jumpstart event Monday, April 9, in the atrium of the Convocation Center. Sponsored by Busch's Supermarket, the event provided opportunities for EMU student-athletes to enhance their career development skills.

"We wanted our student-athletes to get a lot out of this event," Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Services Karen Schiferl said. "Primarily the opportunity to interact with professionals in order to increase their network as well as job search skills."

The event provided opportunities for EMU student-athletes to interact with professional organizations for internships and employment opportunities.  Graduating football student-athletes Dan Samuelson (Plymouth, Ind.-Plymouth-Michigan) and Johnnie Niupalau (San Mateo, Calif.-San Mateo-College of San Mateo) were the driving force behind the creation of the event which began as a class project for their communications capstone course.

"My next question after football season was, what's next?" said Niupalau. "I am pleased to be a part of the EMU student-athlete career fair because I had no idea about my future. Planning and attending this event allowed me to have a better understanding of what career I want to do for the rest of my life."

The evening consisted of employer tables and a networking reception to help prepare Eastern Michigan student-athletes for future career fairs and interviews.  The evening culminated with a drawing where senior baseball player Luke DeVenney (Des Moines, Iowa-Dowling Catholic) won $200 towards the purchase of a business suit.

Companies that participated in the career fair included:  Busch's Market, City Year, Detroit Zoological Society, Eastern Michigan University Graduate School of Business, Eaton Steel Bar Company, Eli Lilly & Company, Enterprise Holding, National Association of African-American in Human Resources, Northwestern Mutual, One Main Financial, Pioneer High School, Quicken Loans, Sherwin-Williams, Walgreens, and Washtenaw County Children's Services.
