EMU out-hit the Golden Grizzlies, 10-8
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team fell just shy in a 4-2 midweek setback to Oakland University Tuesday evening, April 10, at Oestrike Stadium. The Eagles (10-19, 5-4 MAC) had the bases loaded with one out in the ninth, but could not scrape across any runs.
EMU's pitching staff continued its solid momentum, only allowing one earned run on the night. Freshman Scott Granzotto (Northville, Mich.-Gabriel Richard) took the tough loss after pitching four innings in relief, giving up three runs, all unearned, while striking out one. After Granzotto, fellow freshman Dillon Schroeder (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford Senior) tossed two clean frames, facing the minimum on one hit and one strikeout.
Offensively, the Green and White out-hit Oakland, 10-8, led by a three-hit day from sophomore Devin Hager (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern), tying a career-high. Freshman Shane Easter (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Comstock) also tallied a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while junior Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) smacked a solo home run for his lone hit, his fourth homer of the season.
EMU struck first in the second inning with some two-out magic. Redshirt junior Alex Wolanski (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) took a pitch off the knee with two outs and Hager executed a perfect bunt-single to put two on for Easter. The freshman lined a solid single to center, scoring Wolanski, and giving EMU the early 1-0 lead.
Oakland answered right back in top of the third with a two-out RBI of its own to tie it back up. The Golden Grizzlies took the lead in the next inning with three unearned runs to break open a 4-1 advantage.
After coming on in relief in the fourth, Granzotto tossed scoreless fifth and sixth innings to keep the game within reach. Sandwiched between that was a solo home run from Schuemann in the fifth, a no-doubt dinger to left field, to make it a two-run game into the seventh.
After quick seventh, eighth, and ninth from Granzotto and Schroeder, EMU made a rally in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases up with one out, but Oakland pitched out of the jam to escape with the two-run win.
EMU comes right back to Oestrike Stadium tomorrow night, April 11, for an evening game against Concordia University. First pitch against the Cardinals is set for 6 p.m.
