Big Eighth Inning Dooms Eagles in Loss to Cowboys

EMU was tied with Oklahoma State after seven innings

STILLWATER, Okla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team was tied with Oklahoma State University in the eighth inning, but a five-run frame from the Cowboys was too much in an 8-3 defeat Friday evening, March 9, at Reynolds Stadium.

The Eagles (3-10) battled from down a pair in the middle innings to tie the contest, but the Cowboys (8-4) exploded for five runs on six hits and an error in the penultimate inning to escape with the win in the series opener.

Junior Kolton Schenker (Augusta, Kan.-Augusta (Labette C.C.)) followed up his two-homer game on Tuesday with another two-hit day, including a solo homer over the fence in right field. It was his team-leading fourth homer of the season. Fellow junior Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) also had a two-hit contest, his team-best eighth multi-hit game of the year.

On the mound, freshman Scott Granzotto (Northville, Mich.-Gabriel Richard) tossed a pair of scoreless frames in relief to keep the Green and White in the game. He struck out two while only yielding one hit.

Oklahoma State struck in the first inning, getting a run on a wild pitch. OSU proceeded to load the bags with one out, but a strikeout and line out induced by freshman Thomas House (Okeana, Ohio-Ross) ended the threat.

Eastern tied it in the third with a solo home run from Schenker, a towering drive to right field. His third homer in two games knotted it at one. The Pokes took the lead right back, though, getting a runs in the third and fourth to go back ahead, 3-1, entering the fifth.

Following a scoreless fifth inning from Granzotto, EMU came back to tie it up in the sixth with a pair of runs. The Green and White started with back-to-back doubles from junior Cameron Cruz (Chandler, Ariz.- Hamilton (Mesa C.C.)) and Schuemann to make it second and third. Redshirt freshman Jeff Timko (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Brother Rice) drove in the first with an infield single. After a walk loaded the bags, sophomore Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) dribbled a ball into no man's land, which was bobbled, and allowed Schuemann to score, tying it at three.

EMU's bullpen continued to throw shutout frames in the bottom of the sixth and seventh, but finally yielded the lead in the eighth as Oklahoma State went for five runs on six hits and an error. EMU proceeded to get one on in the ninth with Schenker's second hit, but he was left stranded.

The Eagles and Cowboys return to the diamond tomorrow, March 10, for game two of the three-game series. First pitch at Reynolds Stadium is set for 3 p.m.
