– The Eastern Michigan University softball team blasted a pair of home runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but its rally fell short against Ohio University, 4-3, Saturday, March 31, at Varsity Field.

Trailing 4-2 entering the bottom of the seventh, freshman Sophia Holland (Lugoff, S.C.-Lugoff-Elgin) led off the frame with a home run to center. However, the next three batters went down in order for the Eagles (4-25, 0-6 MAC) as the Bobcats (18-12, 6-0 MAC) escaped with a one-run victory.

EMU recorded three extra-base hits in the contest. Senior Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) finished 1-for-3 with an RBI double, while junior Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) and Holland each hit their first dingers of the campaign.

Junior Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) got the start and tossed three innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits. Senior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) kept EMU in the game, hurling four shutout innings in relief, allowing three hits while striking out three. The Green and White held the Bobcats to a series-low seven hits.

Ohio used a pair of solo home runs to grab a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Eagles responded with a run in the bottom of the frame. Freshman Casey Skeens (Poca, W. Va.-Poca) led off with a walk, and scored when Hostetler lined a double into the gap in left-center.

The Bobcats added to their lead with runs in the third and fourth innings to go in front, 4-1. EMU started to rally in the bottom of the sixth, as Logan sent a solo shot over the left-field fence to cut the deficit to 4-2 heading into the final frame.

Eastern Michigan starts a brief three-game road stint Tuesday, April 3, with a doubleheader with the University of Toledo. First pitch of the twin bill is scheduled for 1 p.m.
