Eastern hosts Ball State and Saginaw Valley Friday before traveling to Western Michigan Sunday

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University tennis team returns to play this weekend with two Mid-American Conference matches and a non-conference bout. EMU plays host to conference foe Ball State University at the Chippewa Racquet Club, Friday, March 30 at 1 p.m. and follows it up with a non-conference bout against Saginaw Valley State University at the University of Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center at 5:30 p.m. The Eagles then hit the road to take on Western Michigan University Sunday, April 1, at 1 p.m.

After opening up MAC play with a win over Akron, the Eagles (12-4) saw their nine-match winning streak snap at the hands of Buffalo in a hard-fought 4-3 loss. Eastern bounced back with a convincing 4-1 victory over NCAA Division II No. 45-ranked Wayne State. Senior Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani) leads the Green and White with a 14-0 record as EMU's No. 1 singles player, while fellow senior Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Pacheco) has put together an impressive 10-3 overall record, including an 8-1 mark at No. 6 singles. Gogvadze is riding a 15-match winning streak dating back to the fall tour season, while Almoyna has won eight in a row.

Ball State (7-7, 0-2 MAC) came out of the gates slow in MAC play, falling to Miami 6-1 and Bowling Green 4-3 last weekend, and have now lost three straight matches. BSU is led by Isabelle Dohanics and Rebecca Herrington, who lead the team with eight wins each in the dual season. Dohanics has played the majority of her matches at No. 4 singles, compiling a 6-4 record, while Herrington is 4-0 at No. 5. Herrington has also teamed up with Audrey Berger in doubles for a combined 9-4 record on the season.

Western Michigan (9-7, 0-0 MAC) has won two straight matches and is an impressive 7-1 when playing in Kalamazoo this season. The Broncos are opening MAC play Friday, March 30 against Northern Illinois. WMU has had Barbare Eristavi and Melina Lyubomirova perform well at No. 1 singles this season, going 6-4 and 4-2 respectively. Western has used 17 doubles combinations on the season, with the duo of Lyubomirova and Katja Fevralev turning in a 4-5 record at the No. 1 spot.

Eastern's non-conference bout for the weekend comes Friday night against yet another member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) in Saginaw Valley State. The Cardinals have a record of 12-10 on the season, as the GLIAC holds its tennis championship season in the fall. Since the calendar has turned to 2018, SVSU has gone 3-5 and has lost four of its last five matches. This is the fourth member of the GLIAC that Eastern has played this season, having already defeated conference champion Grand Valley State, as well as Northwood and Wayne State earlier this year.
