YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Known to generations of Eastern Michigan University student-athletes, coaches and staff, EMU Associate Head Athletic Trainer Bill Tuscany will retire on March 28, after 32 years of service to the University. A 1973 EMU graduate, Tuscany has been a constant fixture on the field, pool deck, track, and training room since the fall of 1986.

"Bill has been a vital part of the athletic training staff at Eastern for so many years, starting as a student through being a staff member," said EMU Associate Athletics Director of Sports Medicine Jennifer Brown. "The impact he has had on the lives of hundreds of student-athletes and athletic training students is immeasurable. We cannot thank him enough for dedicating his life to the healthcare of EMU students. We wish him the best in retirement and look forward to seeing him in the stands."

"I'm very appreciative for all Eastern Michigan University has provided throughout my career." Tuscany added. "I've spent over half my life here – either as staff or student – so it will always be my home and like family. I was also very fortunate to have met my wife here at EMU as she is also an alumnus."

Tuscany, who was promoted to associate head athletic trainer in September of 2001, primarily worked in the Bowen Field House Athletic Training Room overseeing the Olympic sports.  A charter member of the Athletic Training Chapter of the Eastern Michigan Alumni Association, Tuscany served as a preceptor in EMU's accredited athletic training curriculum.

"I want to thank Bill for his 32 years of service to Eastern Michigan Athletics," said EMU Vice President and Director of Athletics Scott Wetherbee. "Over the last three decades, he has tirelessly provided the highest quality athletic training care to countless student-athletes, which in turn has had a direct impact on our teams' successful on-field performances. In my short tenure on campus, I've heard so many stories from our alumni on how much of an impact Bill had on their careers when they were competing. We congratulate him and wish him the best of luck in his retirement."

During his time on campus, Tuscany has worked hand-in-hand with 105 of EMU 143 all-time Mid-American Conference Championship teams. He has also worked with scores of Olympians, National Champions, and All-Americans as a part of his sports medicine responsibilities.

Before joining the EMU athletics department, Tuscany was the head athletics trainer at Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill., from 1976-86.  In addition to his athletic training duties at Lewis, Tuscany was the director of the Emergency Medical Service, an associate professor in physical education and from 1981-86 he was the chairman of the physical education department. In 1993 Tuscany was elected to the Lewis University Hall of Fame.

The 66-year-old Tuscany was also a Board of Certification Examiner from 1978 until 2009 at which time the exam was computerized. Tuscany is in his 42nd year as a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) and is a recipient of the 25 year award. He is also a member of the Michigan Athletic Trainers' Society, and  the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association. He is a licensed Athletic Trainer by the State of Michigan.

The Eastern Michigan University Athletic Training Program is planning a celebration of Tuscany's career Saturday, April 14, at Los Amigos (2851 E Michigan Ave, Ypsilanti, MI 48198). The event will from 5:30 to 9 p.m. The program asks people to share your memories or photos with Program Director Jodi Schumacher at jschuma5@emich.edu.
