Baseball Blanks Miami in Series Finale, 4-0

3/25/2018 4:03:00 PM | Baseball

Luke DeVenney tossed seven shutout innings in the victory

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team earned its first win in Mid-American Conference play this season with a 4-0 victory over Miami University Sunday, March 25, at Oestrike Stadium. The Eagles (6-15, 1-2 MAC) defeated the RedHawks (13-7, 2-1 MAC) for the first time at home in exactly six years.

Senior Luke DeVenney (Des Moines, Iowa-Dowling Catholic) tossed seven shutout innings, allowing four hits and three walks while tying his career-high with five strikeouts. Freshman Thomas House (Okeana, Ohio-Ross) and junior Caleb Hester (Coloma, Mich.-Coloma) were stout in relief, each tossing one scoreless inning to preserve the shutout.

Offensively, the Green and White generated a series-best 10 hits in the contest. Junior Cameron Cruz (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton (Mesa C.C.)) had a career day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three singles and scoring two runs, while freshman Jared Kauffman (Springboro, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick) finished 2-for-4 with a double for his second consecutive multi-hit game.

EMU broke the scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded and two outs, Cruz scored when redshirt freshman Jeff Timko (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Brother Rice) was hit by a pitch to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Junior Kolton Schenker (Augusta, Kan.-Augusta (Labette C.C)) then walked to drive home sophomore Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) as the Green and White grabbed a 2-0 advantage.

The Eagles manufactured another two-out rally in the fourth, tallying two more runs to take a commanding 4-0 lead. After grounding a base hit through the left side, Cruz scored when Owings whacked a double into the gap in right-center. Junior Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) wrapped up the scoring when he ripped a single through the right side to plate Owings.

Miami never threatened to cut into EMU's lead, recording just four hits on the afternoon. In the top of the ninth, Hester struck out the first two batters he faced before freshman Parker Massman lined out to right as the Green and White captured their first shutout since blanking Buffalo, 4-0, April 30, 2017.

Eastern Michigan will remain at home when it plays host to Youngstown State for a midweek contest Tuesday, March 27. First pitch against the Penguins is set for 6 p.m. at Oestrike Stadium.
