Nicolle Miranda vs. Marist

Eagles Swept by Bulls as EMU Drops Series Finale

3/24/2018 7:24:00 PM | Softball

Nicolle Miranda pitched her 200th career strikeout

BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) –The long ball did the Eastern Michigan University softball team in, as the Eagles (4-21, 0-3 MAC) were swept by the University at Buffalo, Saturday, March 24, at Dobson Field in a Mid-American Conference doubleheader. The Green and White could not keep up with Buffalo's (11-14, 3-0 MAC) bats as it fell, 4-6 and 0-8.

Game 1: Eastern Michigan 4, Buffalo 6
At the plate, two Eagles picked up multi-hit efforts behind a seven-hit outing for the Green and White. Both junior Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) and freshman Lauren Holdsworth (Howell, Mich.-Ladywood) notched a pair of hits, while Holdsworth blasted her first career homerun in the second inning. The freshman also produced her second multi-RBI game, pacing EMU with two.

Much like yesterday, Buffalo used the opening frame to jump to an early lead over the Eagles. Facing a five-run deficit, the Green and White slowly began to chip away at the Bulls' lead throughout the afternoon.

Holdsworth's solo homerun in the second inning kicked off Eastern's scoring. During the top of the fourth, Akles got on base with a double, before Holdsworth's RBI-single plated junior Alex Peters (Oscoda, Mic.-Alpena), who was pinch running for Akles.

UB was able to score one more runner in the fourth, before EMU attempted a late-inning comeback in the sixth.

Akles got the rally started with her second hit of the day before junior Sam Isaly (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Coffman) connected for a single. After both advanced on a wild pitch, Akles would come across home thanks to a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace). With a runner on third, freshman Sophia Holland (Lugoff, S.C.-Lugoff-Elgin) registered her first hit of the season, scoring Isaly. That would be as close as the Eagles would get, however, as a strikeout halted EMU's advances.

Freshman Kiara Hurley (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) got her fourth start of the season on the mound as she now drops to 0-3. Hurley's time was cut short as she gave up three hits and five runs, one of which was earned, in the first inning. Coming in at relief, senior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) got right to work and through 5.1 innings of work, gave up just three hits and one run.

Game 2: Eastern Michigan 0, Buffalo 8
On the rubber, junior Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) became just the 12th Eagle in program history to record 200 career strikeouts as Miranda (2-12) fanned four on the day. After the Wilmington, Calif. native tossed 3.1 innings, Trujillo got her second call of the day from the bullpen for relief. Pitching through a combined one inning of work, Trujillo struck out three while giving up two runs on three hits.

The Green and White were able to muster a total of five hits throughout five innings. Junior Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) and sophomore Arielle Anderson (Marion, Ohio-Pleasant) paced the Eagles with two hits apiece, while Akles dished out her 10th double of the season.

The Eagles take a quick break from conference play as they make the trek to Indiana to take on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, Tuesday, March 27. The midweek clash is slated for 4:30 p.m.
