Johnson and Ziegenfuss Complete Sweep of MAC Weekly Honors

The two competed strong at the Baldy Castillo Invite
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University men's track and field athletes, sophomore Tyler Johnson (Dayton, Ohio-Stivers School for the Arts) and junior Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa.-Parkland), swept the Mid-American Conference Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors for the period ending March 18, the league office announced Friday, March 23. Johnson and Ziegenfuss join female track and field athletes seniors Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa.-Hempfield Area) and Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia-Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) in EMU's complete sweep of the conference weekly awards.
Johnson got the outdoor regular season off to a hot start, competing strong in a few events at the Baldy Castillo Invite, Saturday, March 17. Johnson ran to an impressive time of 46.98 in the 400m, setting a new PR and placing fourth in the strong pool of competitors. Additionally, that time now sits as the ninth fastest mark in the country. He also competed in both relay events, helping the 4x100 team to a first-place finish with a time of 40.26, which also ranks ninth in the country, while assisting the 4x400 squad to a fourth-place finish with a time of 3:11.67.
Ziegenfuss had a solid showing in his return to action at the Baldy Castillo Invite, Saturday, March 17. The Allentown, Pa. native marked a distance of 57.54m to place fifth in the event. His toss also ranks first in the conference and 71st in the nation.
Johnson, Ziegenfuss, and the Eagles return to competition Friday-Saturday, March 30-31, when they take part in the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C.
