YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University tennis team opens its first weekend of Mid-American Conference play with matches against the University of Akron, Friday, March 23 at 1 p.m., and the University at Buffalo, Saturday, March 24, at 1 p.m. Following the two conference matches is a non-conference bout against NCAA Division II Wayne State University, Saturday, March 25 at 5 p.m. The Eagles will play both MAC matches at the Chippewa Racquet Club, while they host Wayne State at the University of Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center.
The Eagles (10-3) have stormed past their 2017 victory total, adding two more convincing wins last weekend over in-state foes Oakland (6-1) and Detroit (5-2). Senior Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani) leads the Green and White with an 11-0 record as EMU's No. 1 singles player, while junior Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) has put together an impressive 8-3 mark at No. 2. Gogvadze has teamed with fellow senior Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) to go 5-2 as Eastern's No. 2 doubles pairing.
Akron (11-7) has had a busy start to the season, collecting wins over the likes of Detroit, Oakland, and Cleveland State while losing to Youngstown State. The Zips are led by Miruna Vasilescu, who is 12-2 on the season playing at No. 1, 2 and 3 singles, and Luisa Echeverry, who has put together an 11-5 record while playing primarily at No. 5 singles. The doubles combination of Rita Pedroso and Anna Uljanov is an impressive 7-1 at No. 1 on the season.
Buffalo (7-3) has played only 10 games this season, but has picked up four straight wins over Niagara, Binghamton, the College of Charleston, and South Carolina State. The Bulls will also take on the University of Toledo Friday, March 23, before traveling to Ypsilanti.
Eastern's non-conference bout for the weekend comes Sunday evening against another member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) in Wayne State University. The Warriors have a record of 14-5 on the season, as the GLIAC holds its tennis championship season in the fall. Since the calendar has turned to 2018, Wayne State has gone 4-2 with their only losses coming to Division I Radford and Division II No. 13-ranked Saint Leo. The Warriors, who finished runner-up in the GLIAC Tournament in the fall, are the second member of the GLIAC that Eastern has played this season, having already defeated conference champion Grand Valley State earlier this year.
