FINAL RESULTS
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team and redshirt sophomore Sa'Derian Perry (Lakeland, Fla.-Lake Gibson) concluded the 2017-18 season at the final day of the 2018 NCAA Wrestling Championships Saturday, March 17, as Perry finished in eighth place at 141 lbs.
Perry became EMU's fifth Division I All-American and first since 1999 last night with a thrilling 8-6 decision in the 'bloodround' over Michael Carr of Illinois. He entered today with a chance to take seventh place, but fell in his bout to Chad Red of Nebraska to settle for the eight-spot in the rankings.
The Lakeland, Fla. native concluded his sophomore campaign with a career-best 18 wins, as well as a third-place finish at Mid-American Conference Championships. As a team at the 2018 Wrestling Championships, EMU had four wins, and concluded with five points and a tie for 40th-place out of 72 teams.
The end of EMU's participation in the championships put a cap on what was a historic end to the 2017-18 campaign for Head Coach David Bolyard and his team. The Eagles were a perfect 3-0 in home duals, finishing with an 8-8 mark overall. At the 2018 MAC Championships, the team finished third, its best finish since 2013, while redshirt junior Kayne MacCallum (Green Oaks, Ill-Libertyville) was an individual champion at 184 lbs., EMU's first conference title winner since 2009.
After MACs, EMU qualified five wrestlers into the NCAA Championships, tying a program record, with four automatic bids and one at-large. The momentous end to the season was capped off with Perry's All-American run to give Bolyard his first as a head coach, and the fifth in EMU's history.
