CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – For the first time since 1999, the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team has an All-American as redshirt sophomore Sa'Derian Perry (Lakeland, Fla.-Lake Gibson) locked up the honor at 141 lbs. on day two of the 2018 NCAA Wrestling Championships inside Quicken Loans Arena, Friday night, March 16. Perry is the fifth All-American in program history, and the first since Mike Feeney took eighth in 1999.
Perry began his day in the quarterfinals where he met top-seeded Bryce Meredith of Wyoming. The number one ranked grappler knocked Perry out of the championship bracket, sending him to the infamous 'bloodround' where he would meet No. 11 seeded Michael Carr of Illinois for All-American status.
Perry got the bout started with a quick takedown and proceeded to rack up riding time over the next two periods. Carr battled back to tie it up, 3-3, and then later, 5-5, but Perry still had over two minutes of riding time into the third.
Carr escaped late in the third to claim the lead, but it was essentially tied with riding time locked up. Not satisfied with overtime, Perry had one last shot, and got in on Carr for what seemed like a takedown, but it was not ruled so by the referees before the buzzer. With a challenge for EMU in the pocket, the refs reviewed and decided Perry had secured the takedown, and with riding time, he took the dramatic 8-6 decision to lock up the All-American honors.
Perry's day was not finished, however, as he took on No. 8 seeded Nick Lee of Penn State not too long after to decide which placement match he would wrestle in. Despite an early lead, Perry dropped the bout, to qualify for the seventh place match tomorrow morning.
Elsewhere, redshirt junior Kayne MacCallum (Green Oaks, Ill.-Libertyville) ended his season in the consolation rounds, falling to Mitchell Bowman of Iowa. The 184 lbs. MAC Champion finished the season with a career-best 18 wins.
Perry concludes the 2018 NCAA Championships tomorrow, March 17, with the seventh place match against Chad Red of Nebraska. The final session inside the Q will start at 11 a.m.
