YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team ended the regular season with a, 195.375-192.725, victory over Mid-American Conference rival Western Michigan University Friday, March 16, on Senior Night inside the Convocation Center.
It was the second straight week the Eagles broke the 195 plateau, and the second-best overall team score of the season. Additionally, EMU's beam score of 49.050 was a season-high, and was the first time this year the Green and White marked a 49-or-better in the event.
Eastern started its evening on vault, where the group earned a 48.75. The Eagles were led by senior Kendall Valentin (Holmdel, N.J.-Holmdel), who marked a 9.8 to rank second overall. Altogether, EMU had five of its six vaults land in the top-six, with sophomore Emili Dobronics (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) and junior Megan Hultgren (Rockford, Ill.-Sacred Heart Classical Center) tying with a 9.75, while senior Jules Schwartz (Gilbert, Ariz.-Mesquite) and freshman Cali Harden (Saline, Mich.-Saline) each earned a 9.725.
The second rotation saw EMU on bars, with the cohort notching a team score of 48.6. Valentin led all performers with a 9.9 to win the event title, while redshirt senior Lacey Rubin (Plainview, N.Y.-Plainview Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy) tied for second overall with a 9.775. Furthermore, redshirt sophomore Carly Clark (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) tied her career-high with a 9.7 to tie for fifth in the event.
Beam proved to be Eastern's best event of the night, as the squad tallied a season-high score of 49.050, with all six routines landing within the top-seven overall. Once again, Valentin found herself at the top of all competitors, as she notched a season-high 9.9, her second of the night, to take the title. Fellow senior Megan Marino (Girard, Ohio-Howland) also put together an impressive routine, hitting for her second 9.825 on beam in three weeks. Tying for third in the event, Rubin marked a 9.8 after not earning a score of 9.8-or-higher on beam since the fourth meet of the season. Freshman Jada Rondeau (Norwood Young America, Minn.-Central) put together the second-best score of her young career with a 9.775, while Dobronics and Hultgren earned a 9.75 and 9.725, respectively, to round out the Eagle beam routines.
EMU ended its night on floor, putting up its third-best score on the event this season with a 48.975. Senior Kirsten Gendron (Birch Run, Mich.-Frankenmuth), Dobronics, and Marino all earned 9.825s for their routines, which tied Gendron and Marino's career-marks and ranked second overall in the meet. Additionally, redshirt freshman Allie Smith (Telford, Pa.-Souderton) and Schwartz each notched a 9.75, with Smith's tying her career-high.
For her impressive performances in all events, Dobronics won the all-around title with a score of 38.975, her fifth-highest score of the season.
Next weekend, EMU looks to bring home its third consecutive conference title as the Eagles take part in the MAC Championship meet Saturday, March 24, in Mount Pleasant, Mich. Action is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
