CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team advanced two of its five grapplers to the second day of the 2018 NCAA Wrestling Championships at the conclusion of day one, Thursday, March 15, at Quicken Loans Arena.
Highlighting the day was redshirt sophomore Sa'Derian Perry (Lakeland, Fla.-Lake Gibson) who advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 141 lbs. bracket, becoming the first EMU wrestler to get to the quarterfinals since All-American Joel Smith in 1989.
Joining Perry in the second day of the national tournament is redshirt junior Kayne MacCallum (Green Oaks, Ill.-Libertyville) at 184 lbs. as he won his consolation match after falling in the opening round. It is the first time since 2014 that EMU will have two of its wrestlers see action on day two of the NCAA Championships.
Perry, who entered the tournament with a 15-16 record, but earned an automatic bid after taking third at Mid-American Conference Championships, won both of his matches in commanding fashion. He started his day by knocking off No. 9 seeded Josh Alber of Northern Iowa, 11-5. With the upset win under his belt, he matched up with fellow unseeded Ryan Diehl of Maryland in the Round of 16.
In the second round match, Perry came out firing, getting a takedown and near fall points to lead 6-0 in the first. Diehl battled back to get within a couple of points, but Perry tilted the Terrapin wrestler again in the third period to power through to a 12-6 decision, and a trip to the quarterfinals, where he will wrestle top-seeded 141-pounder Bryce Meredith of Wyoming.
For MacCallum, the 184 lbs. MAC Champion, he began his day with a tough 12-5 defeat to No. 16 seeded Jordan Ellingwood in their third meeting of the season. Coming back after a long break in the evening, MacCallum battled to a 4-3 decision over Martin Mueller of South Dakota State to get to the next round of consolations where he will meet Mitchell Bowman of Iowa.
The other three EMU wrestlers, redshirt sophomore Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Lake) and redshirt seniors Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption (Indiana)) and Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) all did not taste victory in their matches, ending their time in Cleveland. For Carson, he finished his season with an impressive 21 wins, while Hutchison and Springer wrapped up their incredible careers in the Green and White with 94 and 84 wins, respectively. Springers win total ranks 10th all-time at EMU, while Hutchison's are sixth.
Perry and MacCallum return to the mats for day two of the NCAA Championships tomorrow, March 16. Both the quarterfinals and wrestle backs will begin at 11 a.m.
