The Eagles notched a weekend-high 10 hits against the Cardinals
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games in the second day of the Louisville Softball Classic, Saturday, March 10, at Ulmer Stadium. The Eagles (4-15) fell to Bradley University (10-10), 7-3, in its rematch, before dropping a 10-6 decision against the University of Louisville (18-5).
Game 1: Eastern Michigan 3, Bradley 7
Pitching her eighth complete game this season, junior Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) moved within 14 strikeouts in her quest for 200 in her career with six more against the Braves. Miranda (2-8) gave up seven runs in the loss, five of which were earned.
Eastern started the game off strong with an early 1-0 lead when junior Sam Saporito (Eastvale, Calif.-Eleanor Roosevelt) came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview).
After the Braves used three runs in the second frame to push ahead of the Green and White, the Eagles chipped away at the lead with a Saporito RBI-double to left field in the third to get EMU within one, 3-2.
Bradley extended its lead, 4-2, in the bottom of the third. In the sixth, senior Brandice Olmos' (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) single to right to score Logan to get Eastern within one. That would be as close as Eastern would get, however, as the Braves scored three in the sixth.
Game 2: Eastern Michigan 6, Louisville 10
In the night game, the Green and White pounded out a weekend-high 10 hits and six runs. The Eagles had four different batters produce a pair of hits, while freshman Lauren Holdsworth (Howell, Mich.-Ladywood) registered a game-high three RBIs. Eastern's downfall came in errors with EMU committing five, four of which resulted in runs.
On the rubber, freshman Kiara Hurley (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) earned the starting nod, pitching a season-high 3.2 innings. Hurley gave up seven runs, four of which were earned, and she struck out two. Both senior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier Calif.-California) and Miranda made appearances as relief.
The Eagles came out firing from all ends to start the game as they produced three hits which resulted in an early 3-0 lead. Junior Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) got the hitting frenzy started with a double down the left line, plating senior Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan). Two batters later, Holdsworth blasted a two-RBI single to right field, before sophomore Ariana Chretien (Commerce, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern Commerce) followed suit with a single of her own. EMU's advances were halted after a strikeout swinging.
Louisville answered right back by cutting the Green and White's lead to one with a two runs.
After a quiet second frame, EMU pushed its lead to three with two runs in the third. With a runner in scoring position and one out, Holdsworth laid down a bunt, allowing junior Alex Peters (Oscada, Mich.-Alpena) to slide into home. Stepping into the box, Chretien pounded a single up the middle to bring Holdsworth in from second.
The Cardinals used massive innings in the fourth and sixth to distance itself from the Eagles. EMU was able to score one runner in the fifth, but that would be the last time Eastern would score for the night.
The Eagles return to the diamond Sunday, March 11, when they rematch UMass at 10 a.m. on the final day of the Louisville Softball Classic.
