ALLENDALE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team picked up its first team victory of the season Saturday, Jan. 27, at the GVSU Lints Alumni Meet in Allendale, Mich. Collectively the Eagles scored 168 points behind seven first-place finishes.
"We had good performances in all event areas and I'm pleased with how the team is looking at this point of the season," said Head Coach Sue Parks. "We loaded up some of the sprinters to see how they would handle the work load and they performed well. The 1600 relay ran an outstanding time in a solo effort. Several of the distance runners were bouncing back from a bad flu bug but we still got in some important MAC qualifying marks. We're excited to head into this next stretch of the season and keep the improvement going heading into the MAC meet one month from now."
Senior Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa.-Hempfield Area) paced the Eagles sprints squad, capturing first place in both the 200m and 400m dash with times of 24.20 and 54.89, respectively. Additionally, in both events EMU swept the top-three slots, with sophomore Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian) placing second and notching new personal-bests in each.
Redshirt senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia-Lyceum #83) and senior Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison) both had impressive days in their respective events, as Bogdanova took gold in the 800m with a new career-best time of 2:10.91 while McDermitt earned first in the 3000m in her first competition this season. Senior Natalie Cizmas (Chippewa Twp., Mich.-Chippewa Valley) also had an outstanding day, taking second in the 800m and mile run, with her mile time of 4:40.31 serving as a new career-best.
Junior Ayanna O'Neal (Cincinnati, Ohio-Withrow) and senior Tifani Byrd (Toms River, N.J.-Toms River North) swept the top-two places in the 60m hurdles with times of 8.68 and 8.76, respectively. Freshman Crystal Washington (Los Angeles, Calif.-Carson) also notched a first-place and personal-best of her own in the triple jump, covering a distance of 11.89m.
The Green and White return to action Friday, Feb. 2, when they take part in the Meyo Invitational located in South Bend, Ind.
