Senior Taylor Wagner finished 3-for-4 on the day
MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team fell behind early and was never able to overcome the deficit in a, 5-1, loss to Columbia University, Saturday afternoon, Feb. 25.
Senior Taylor Wagner (Marshalltown, Iowa-Marshalltown) accounted for three of EMU's four hits, finishing 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. Junior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) notched the other hit for the Eagles, going 1-for-3.
Freshman Savanah White (Visalia, Calif.-Redwood) was the pitcher of record, getting sacked with the loss. White ran into trouble in the first inning after an illegal pitch brought home a run. The next batter sent White's delivery over the fence in left field, pushing the Lions' lead to three, 3-0. Senior Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) pitched the Eagles out of the inning, getting a fly ball to right, where senior Michelle Kreigshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) made a diving catch.
The score remained the same into the bottom of the third. After the Eagles stranded a runner on second, Columbia used a pair of RBI doubles to extend its lead to five, 5-0. The Lions tried to take on another, but junior Haley Hostetler's (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) throw from center was cut by freshman Ariana Chretien (Commerce, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) and fired home, where Wagner applied the tag to save a run and escape the inning.
Eastern's offense picked up in the fourth, as Wagner led off the frame with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After Wagner scooted into third on a past ball, sophomore Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) walked to put runners on the corners. Another walked loaded the bases and forced the Lions to go to the bullpen. Sophomore Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) was the first Eagle to face the new pitcher. Patient at the plate, Logan drew a bases loaded walk to bring Wagner in from third and put the Eagles on the board. The Green and White failed to do much else in the inning, leaving the bases loaded.
Making an appearance in relief, sophomore Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) held the Lions in check over the final 3.1 innings of play. Miranda allowed just two hits and struck out one, but a stagnant offense down the stretch allowed the game to end, 5-1, in favor of Columbia.
The Eagles wrap up their trip to Florida tomorrow, with games against Stony Brook and Detroit Mercy on the final day of the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational.
