With the indoor regular season in the rearview mirror, the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team turns its attention to the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, Feb. 24-25, held in Bowen Field House. The Eagles look to win their first indoor title since 2013, which coincidentally also happened at home in Ypsilanti.

Last week, the Eagles sent a limited number of participants to the GVSU Tune-Up, Friday, Feb. 17, in Allendale, Mich. The meet gave Eastern student-athletes one final opportunity to get some experience under their belts before the postseason.

In the 800m run, redshirt sophomore Nick McFarland (Hillsborough, N.J. – Hillsborough) had the best mark of his career, taking sixth with a personal-best time of 1:54.99. Sophomore Frank Douglas (Mansfield, Ohio – Madison Comprehensive) earned a spot in the 60m hurdles finals, taking bronze in the prelims with a time of 8.53 seconds. In the finals, Douglas improved upon his prelims placing and time, taking second with a mark of 8.33 seconds.

In the high jump, freshman Drew Lament (Lakeview, Ohio – Waynesfield-Goshen) turned in a seventh-place finish, posting a mark of 1.75 meters/ 5 feet 8.75-inches. In the pole vault, sophomore Alex Jacobs (Dublin, Ohio - Dublin Jerome) notched a fifth-place finish, posting a mark of 4.66 meters/ 15 feet 3.5-inches, which was a personal-best.

Sophomore Nick Herbert (Portage, Mich. – Portage Northern) brought home gold for the Eagles in the long jump, winning the event with a solid jump of 6.83 meters/ 22 feet 5-inches. Fellow sophomore Micah Peters (York, Ontario – Vaughn Road Academy) also had a solid day, securing third in the triple jump with a mark of 14.13 meters/ 46 feet 4.25-inches.

Last season at the MAC Indoor Championships, the Eagles finished second as a team, amassing a total of 135 points. Senior Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio - Findlay) was named the Most Valuable Performer, winning both the 400m dash and the long jump, in addition to claiming silver in the 200m dash. Redshirt senior Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio - Maumee) brought home a pair of event titles as well, taking top honors in the 3000m and 5000m runs.

The Green and White were also able to claim gold in the weight throw, as redshirt senior Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio - Sandusky) finished atop the podium with a launch of 21.48 meters/ 70 feet 5.75-inches, earning Most Outstanding Field Performer honors.. Finally, then redshirt senior Solomon Simmons won the heptathlon, setting a program record in the event with a total of 5608 points. Following the meet, four Eagles earned All-MAC first team honors, while six nabbed second team honors.

With the regular season now complete, Eastern finished with three student-athletes ranked in the top-50 of their respective events according to the NCAA Division I Indoor Qualifying List from the Track & Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS).  Fink paces the squad, holding onto two of those three spots for EMU. Fink maintains No. 19 in the 3000m based on his time of 7:57.11 from the Husky Classic, Feb. 10, in addition to No. 37 in the 5000m from the season-opening Hoosier Open, Dec. 9.  Finally, sophomore Cameron Hart (Columbus, Ohio - Bishop Hartley) sits at No. 36 in the high jump after notching an impressive jump of 2.14 meters/ 7 feet 0.25-inches at the EMU Triangular, Jan. 28.

The MAC Indoor Championships are scheduled to begin Friday, Feb. 24, at 10 a.m. with both the pentathlon 60m hurdles and the women's shot put. Running events will begin later in the afternoon at 2 p.m. with the women's 60m hurdles trials. Action resumes on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 10 a.m. with the heptathlon 60m hurdles, followed shortly by the men's weight throw at 10:15 a.m. Running events pick back up at 1:30 p.m. with the women's mile run.
