Eagles will compete in the second meet of the season
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University's men's cross country team is set to run in its second meet of the 2014 campaign after opening up the season with a win at the Toledo Home Opener, Aug. 29. This week, the Green and White will stay close to home to compete in the 28th Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Cross Country Invitational, Sept. 6 in Northville, Mich.
Fifteen teams will headline the men's race, including: Bucknell, Concordia, Detroit, EMU, Grand Rapids Community College, Lawrence Tech, Macomb Community College, Madonna, Marygrove, Michigan-Dearborn, Northwood, Oakland, Rochester, Schoolcraft, and Wayne State. Last year, Martin Nelkie won the overall title in 20:44 and led the Titans to a team victory with 37 points. Nelkie has since graduated, but Detroit returns eight runners from last season's roster.
Head Coach John Goodridge, while having a deep roster of experienced harriers like the host school, will use the event to provide his freshman with collegiate running exposure. "Eight of our 10 entries will be freshmen, as I want them to be placed in a team competitive situation while wearing the EMU uniform. They competed well last week in defeating Bowling Green and Toledo, and this event will be a bit more challenging," explained the 14th-year Head Coach.
The meet will take place at Cass Benton Park and will feature six different races. A pair of open 5000m races will start off the day at 9:30 a.m. and 10:10 a.m., followed by the Middle School 1.5 Mile Race at 10:45 a.m. and the Tommy Titan Future Legend's Kids Race at 11:05 a.m. Collegiate competition will begin at 11:15 a.m. with the 5000m Women's Collegiate Invitational, and the Green and White will run the final race, the 4-mile Men's Collegiate Invitational, at 11:45 a.m.
