Eagles Fall in Home Opener to Nationally-Ranked Chippewas, 195.925-194.600

EMU gymnastics records another high team score despite the setback

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Competing in its first home meet of the 2014 campaign, the Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team dropped a Mid-American Conference dual against No. 19-ranked Central Michigan University, 195.925-194.600, Friday night, Feb. 7. The rivalry was contested inside Bowen Field House. With the setback, the Green and White fall to 2-6, including 0-3 in MAC play. The Chippewas remained undefeated on the season with the win, improving to 8-0, 2-0 MAC.
Despite the loss, the Eagles put together a solid score that pleased EMU Head Gymnastics Coach Steve Wilce. "We competed well for the second meet in a row," commented Coach Wilce. "We are extremely proud of these kids as they continue to get better throughout the season."
The meet began with the Eagles on vault while the Chippewas performed routines on the uneven parallel bars. As a team, Eastern recorded a season-best 48.725 on vault, but trailed after the first rotation as CMU scored a 49.05 on bars. Anna Willette (Pylesville, Md.-North Harford) led all EMU vaulters with a 9.800 for a fourth-place finish. Sophomore Kimberly Ebeyer (Greenwood, Ind.-Whiteland Community) followed with a career-high 9.775, and classmate Khadijah Hudson (Hebron, Ky.-Conner) matched that score. Freshmen Bianca Jordaan (Oakville, Ontario-Abbey Park) tallied a 9.700, and Kelsie Brooks (Winston, Ga.-Alexander) received a 9.650 from the judges in her debut as an Eagle. CMU's Halle Moraw ended up taking the vault title with a 9.875.
Halfway through the meet, Eastern trailed by a 98.050-97.450 margin as it matched its beam score with the tally on vault, a 48.725. Team co-captain Ashley Quinton (Calgary, Alberta-Bishop McNally) tied her career-high with a team-best 9.825, and Ariyanna Smith (Gahanna, Ohio-Lincoln) notched a personal-best of her own with a 9.775. Jordaan capped off her strong meet with another career-best, receiving a 9.750 from the judges. Earning an even 9.700 was Carrina Lo Bello (Oshawa, Ontario-McLaughlin Collegiate). On bars, the Chippewas were led by a pair of 9.850s from Becca Druien and Karlee Teet to claim the event's top mark.
EMU's lowest team score of the night came on the beam as the Green and White recorded a total of 48.425. Willette paced the Eagles with a 9.8, tying her season-high and sharing the meet's top mark with Taylor Noonan of the Chippewas. Freshman Natalie Gervais (Winnipeg, Manitoba-Sturgeon Heights) scored a 9.725 on the apparatus, and Ebeyer received a mark of 9.675. Central increased its lead with a 49.050 on the floor exercise as Moraw led the way with a 9.850.
In their final event of the evening, the Eagles scored their third 48.725 of the night on floor. Kaylee Meyers (Saint Joseph, Mo.-Central) continued her success on floor for the second straight week, notching a 9.800 to lead the team. Shawna Ciaramella (Hamilton, Ontario-St. Mary's) and Hudson each tallied scores of 9.750, while Ebeyer earned a 9.725. Chantelle Loehner (Cary, Ill.-Cary-Grove) rounded out EMU's top-five scores with a 9.700. Moraw won her third event of the evening with another 9.850 to lead the Chippewas.
The Eagles will continue its homestand against their in-state rivals, hosting Western Michigan University, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m. The MAC dual will be an Eagles Unite meet for all EMU student-athletes to attend the meet and wear their "Eagles Unite" t-shirts. The contest in Bowen Field House will also be Senior Night as the senior Eagles will be honored in a ceremony on the floor.
