Eagles Secure Senior Night Victory Over Western Michigan

EMU gymnastics beats WMU, 194.500-194.125, to snap a 10-meet MAC losing streak

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – On a night where four seniors were recognized for their careers in Ypsilanti, the Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team soared past the Western Michigan University Broncos, 194.500-194.125, Saturday night Feb. 15, in Bowen Field House. The Mid-American Conference victory snapped a 10-meet losing skid to conference foes.
Fellow EMU student-athletes came out to support the EMU gymnasts as it was an "Eagles Unite" meet. Also following the meet, the senior class was honored for their contributions to the program. The Class of 2014 consisted of: Shawna Ciaramella (Hamilton, Ontario-St. Mary CSS), Miranda Jarvis (Westminster, Md.-Westminster), Taylor Patterson (Xenia, Ohio-Xenia) and Ashley Quinton (Calgary, Alberta-Bishop McNally). Also recognized were redshirt-juniors Chantelle Loehner (Cary, Ill.-Cary-Grove) and Kaylee Meyers (Saint Joseph, Mo.-Central).
"We are very pleased to defeat the defending MAC Champions," noted EMU Head Coach Steve Wilce. "The Western Michigan Broncos gave us a challenge, putting together their highest score of the year. We have competed at a high level for the third straight meet, and I am proud of our effort tonight."
EMU (3-6, 1-3 MAC) started off with the lead, tying its season-best, 48.725, on the vault. Freshman Bianca Jordaan (Oakville, Ontario-Abbey Park) notched a career-high 9.825 to lead the Green and White as she claimed the top score with Western's Jessi Buis. Veterans to the lineup, Khadijah Hudson (Hebron, Ky.-Conner) and Anna Willette (Pylesville, Md.-North Harford) each received a 9.775 from the judges. Kimberly Ebeyer (Greenwood, Ind.-Whiteland Community) and Paulina Miller (Halifax, Nova Scotia-Citadel) followed with scores of 9.675. Meanwhile, Western Michigan (1-6, 1-4 MAC) tallied a 48.475 on the bars, paced by a 9.775 from Shelby MacDonald.
At the halfway point of the meet, Eastern still claimed a 97.275-96.900 advantage after recording a 48.550 on the bars. Quinton paced the Eagles in the event for the second straight week with a runner-up score of 9.750. Willette and Ariyanna Smith (Gahanna, Ohio-Lincoln) both scored 9.725 on the apparatus, while Carrina Lo Bello (Oshawa, Ontario-McLaughlin Collegiate) chipped in with a 9.700.
The Eagles maintained their lead going into the final rotation, 145.975-145.450. Four EMU gymnasts surpassed the 9.700 mark on beam, leading to a team score of 48.700 in the event. Willette continued her strong meet, tying her personal-best with a 9.825 to win the event. Following the junior was Lo Bello and who each earned 9.750 from the two judges; the mark was a career-high for Lo Bello. Rounding out the Eagles that reached the 9.700 goal was freshman Natalie Gervais (Winnipeg, Manitoba-Sturgeon Heights). While the Green and White competed on beam, the Broncos were on the floor. WMU's Lauren Bledsoe led her team in the exercise with a 9.800.
Eastern finished strong on the floor exercise to cap off the victory. Meyers soared above the competition with a 9.850, and teammate Loehner finished runner-up by tying her personal-best at 9.825. Ciaramella added a 9.725 to help secure the victory.
WMU finished up on beam as Buis and Kayla Weber recorded a pair of 9.775s for the best on their team. Weber was the only gymnast to compete in all four events as she tallied an all around score of 38.875.
The Eagles will have 11 days off before their next meet as Eastern will head west to Colorado Springs, Colo. to match up against the Air Force Academy in two duals. The first meet will take place at 6 p.m. MT Wednesday, Feb. 26. EMU will then wrap up its road trip, March 1, in the second meet between the two programs.
