Lyke became the chair of the committee effective Sept. 1, 2014
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Heather Lyke, the Vice President and Director of Athletics at Eastern Michigan University, has been elected chair of the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Committee for the 2014-15 season. Lyke, who is finishing her fourth year on the committee, takes over the role from Jim Siedliski, the associate commissioner in charge of Olympic sports for the American Athletic Conference.
"It is an honor to serve the NCAA and sport of men's lacrosse as the next chair of the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Committee," said Lyke. " I feel fortunate to work alongside distinguished colleagues on this committee. It is our goal to create an exceptional NCAA Championship experience and competitive environment for the quality coaching staff and student-athletes involved in the sport of men's lacrosse."
The national committee represents the membership and performs several duties, including the selection of teams to the NCAA postseason, administration of the championships and other issues regarding the sport.
Lyke is in her second year at Eastern Michigan in 2014-15, having been named to the position on July 1, 2013. Lyke came to Ypsilanti with more than 17 years of experience in intercollegiate athletics administration – 15 of which were at The Ohio State University. Lyke's first year at Eastern Michigan was a successful one, as the Eagles won three Mid-American Conference team championships and 24 individual MAC titles in track & field and swimming & diving. EMU also produced 64 All-MAC student-athletes to go along with 41 Academic All-MAC honorees.
She also helped spearhead the Eagles to the league's Cartwright Award, which is presented annually to one Mid-American Conference university that excels in academics, athletics and citizenship. It marked the first time EMU had received the honor since the award began in 2008-09. In the classroom, EMU student-athletes continued to showcase their success in the classroom, ending the Winter 2014 semester with a 3.145 grade point average. It marked the ninth consecutive semester that the Eagles had surpassed the 3.0 plateau as a department.
Lyke also developed and installed the mantra of Eagles Unite. More than just a catchy slogan, it was a campaign of support that pervaded all of EMU 21 varsity sports. The campaign extended beyond student-athletes; it strongly encouraged the athletic department staff, fans, alumni and students to show their support as well.
