Eagles also place nine on Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention list

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University sophomore gymnast Anna Willette (Pylesville, Md. – North Harford) has been named a Mid-American Conference Academic All-MAC honoree, the conference announced Wednesday, May 1. Willette, the lone representative for EMU on the 23-gymnast team, earns the accolade for the first time in her career.

An All-MAC Second Team selection, Willette was the top vaulter in the MAC, averaging a score of 9.831. The sophomore sensation received a career-high mark from the judges against Southeast Missouri State University, March 3, winning the vault with a 9.875, tying for fifth all-time in EMU laurels. The Pylesville, Md. native tallied seven victories on the 2013 campaign, including five first-place finishes on the vault along with two on the beam. On bars, she has recorded four runner-up finishes.

Willette led Eagles in three-of-four events at MAC Championships, March 23, including finishing runner-up on beam with a 9.800. She scored a personal-best 9.825 on beam twice this season, while setting a career-high 9.825 on bars against Bowling Green, Jan. 26.

Shining on the mats as well as in the classroom, Willette boasts a 3.80 grade point average. She has yet to decide on what her major will be at EMU.

EMU Head Coach Steve Wilce continues to stress acadmics as well as athletic performance. Aside from Willette, nine EMU gymnasts found the Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention list: Brittany Cassar, Shawna Ciaramella, Camille Cicchini, Amanda Fuller, Kristina Kurkmilis, Carrina Lo Bello, Chantelle Loehner, Paulina Miller and Ashley Quinton.

The Academic All-MAC honor, voted by faculty members from MAC institutions, is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments for the current season are only considered.
