YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — There will be plenty of opportunities for fans to support the 2012-13 Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team as the Eagles are scheduled to play 17 games in the friendly confines of the Convocation Center, the most home games slated since the 1977-78 season in a schedule released today, Aug. 29.
Included in that home schedule is an appearance by Big Ten Conference power Purdue as well as the inaugural “EMU Iceman Classic”, named for Eastern Michigan Hall of Fame player and NBA great George Gervin.
The Eagles, who finished 14-18 overall and 9-7 in the Mid-American Conference last season while capturing the West Division championship, will play five teams that participated in the NCAA Tournament last season (Kentucky, Syracuse, Michigan, Ohio, and Purdue) and seven others that competed in other post-season events (Buffalo, Toledo, Kent State, Bowling Green, Akron, UMass, and Oakland).
In addition to that very competitive non-conference schedule, the Eagles also announced their 2012-13 Mid-American Conference schedule today which includes 16 games, eight home and eight on the road.
Eastern will take on defending national champion Kentucky, Elite Eight participant Syracuse, Michigan and UMass on the road while hosting Purdue and Oakland in non-league tilts. When the Eagles play at famed Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky., on Jan. 2. It will be the first time ever the two teams have faced each other.
“Not every school gets an opportunity to play the reigning national champs so the Kentucky game is a great one for our program,” EMU Head Coach Rob Murphy said. “Getting a chance to play the best competition along with a program with so much tradition is what most players dreams of.”
Eastern is slated to open the 2012-13 season with a home exhibition game against the University of Michigan-Dearborn on Nov. 2.
After that exhibition tilt the Eagles move right into regular-season action, hosting the first-ever EMU “Ice Man Classic”, Nov. 16-18 at the Convocation Center. As part of the tournament, EMU will host Rochester College in the Eagles' season opener, Nov. 9. The field will consist of Eastern Illinois, IPFW and Texas Pan-American.
“The “Ice Man” Classic will be a great tournament to kick-off our season,” said Murphy, the 2011-12 MAC Coach of the Year. “We look forward to Mr. Gervin's return to the Convocation Center along with our students, fans and community.”
After a several year hiatus, the Eagles will battle Washtenaw County neighbor Michigan at Crisler Center, Dec. 20. Two days after playing at Michigan, the Eagles will host Oakland, Dec. 22.
