YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)— Junior right hander Steve Weber (6-3) pitched his second complete-game shutout in three starts as the Eastern Michigan University baseball team rolled to another win, 6-0, over Bowling Green State University Saturday, May 5, at Oestrike Stadium. Weber moved to 5-0 in his last six starts as the Eagles remained just one game behind the University of Toledo for the top spot in the Mid-American Conference West Division.

Weber's nine-inning performance marked the third complete game for the Eagles (22-23; 12-8 MAC) in the last three weeks. The North Royalton, Ohio native accounted for the first against Ball State University, May 21, while Neil Butara tossed the other, April 27.

With Saturday's gem, Weber now has two-career complete games and has dropped his season ERA from a 7.78 mark after his April 7 outing at Western Michigan to 5.40. In his last three appearances, the 6-foot-6 righty is 3-0 with a 1.07 ERA and has pitched 25.1 out of a possible 27 innings. He finished the day against Bowling Green allowing four hits—three of which were weakly-hit infield singles—and struck out four while walking three.

Matt Hitt provided the game-winning solo homer in the second inning for his team-leading fifth long ball of the year. The senior catcher was 2-for-3 at the dish with two RBI and a run scored.

Brent Ohrman was the only other EMU player to turn in a multiple-hit game. He went 2-for-5 with a double and his squad-best 32nd RBI of the season.

Ben Magsig reached base for a 29th consecutive game Saturday, marking the longest such streak for an Eagle this season. The previous high was Bo Kinder's 28-game stretch. Magsig went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a walk. The free pass was his 41st and moved him into a tie for the sixth most in a single season in EMU annals. It was also the 110th of his career, which is also good for sixth all-time.

The Falcons (18-27; 7-13 MAC) tightened up a bit on defense in game two, but could not solve Weber. Jake Thomas (1-for-2), Brandon Howard (1-for-1), Jessee Rait (1-for-2) and Alex Davidson (1-for-2) were the only BGSU players to record hits on the afternoon.

Ethan McKenny (1-8) took the loss for Bowling Green, giving up five earned runs and seven hits in four innings of work.

Hitt played long ball to put the Eagles on the scoreboard in the first. Magsig and Tucker Rubino then started off the third inning with back-to-back singles. Ohrman then pushed a base knock to left to load the bases. Sam Ott used a sacrifice fly to plate Magsig before Lee Longo tucked a double down the right field line to score Rubino and send Ohrman to third. Hitt rounded off a three-run inning with the second sacrifice fly of the inning to make it a 4-0 game.

EMU filled the sacks again in the fourth, this time with two outs. Kinder came in to score on a wild pitch by McKenney, but Bowling Green limited the damage to just one run.

Rubino came around to score the Eagles' sixth and final tally in the sixth inning when Ohrman knocked him in with a double down the left-field line.

A 6-0 lead was plenty for Weber to work with. After allowing a leadoff single to Thomas in the first frame, Weber allowed only one more batter to reach base until Thomas worked a two-out walk in the sixth. That inning ended when Tyler Wynn was called out on batter's interference.

The Falcons threatened to chase Weber from the mound in their final at-bat when they loaded the bases with two out. Patrick Lancaster hit a soft bouncer to second baseman John Rubino, who stepped on second base to seal the shutout on Weber's 138th pitch of the game.

Sunday's (May 6) series finale will get underway at 1 p.m. The 2012 graduating senior class will be recognized during a pregame ceremony beginning at 12:30 p.m. Please arrive early to enjoy the ceremony! If you are unable to attend, Eagle All-Access will also begin live audio coverage at 12:25 p.m.
