Rawls Earns Championship Bid in 400-Meter Hurdles

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team had three members competing in the 2012 NCAA East Preliminary Round Friday, May 25, at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla. One of EMU's three competitors was able to advance to the next round in their respective events.

In the quarterfinal round of the 400-meter dash, Shantavia Williams raced a 54.54 which was good for 23rd place in the 27-woman field. The final time Williams recorded was not able to garner a trip to the semifinal round held Saturday afternoon.

Victoria Voronko raced in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and placed 31st in the 48-woman field. Voronko broke her own record of 10:33.50 with a 10:30.41, but was unable to qualify for the NCAA Championships at Drake University, June 6-9.

Asia Rawls did qualify for the semifinal round of the 400-meter hurdles on Friday evening. With a time of 58.50, the second-best time in EMU history, Rawls took 12th place, earning a spot in the semifinal round at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Eagles still have a pair of athletes to compete in the NCAA East Preliminary Round as Lydia Gomez-Diaz and Angela Scarber will take part in the hammer throw. Their event is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Hodges Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
