YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University athletic department is proud to give back to the community and student-athletes and coaches from the EMU football team and the EMU women's basketball teams participated in two separate community-outreach events Saturday, May 19, 2012.
Student-athletes from the EMU football team and the coaching staff joined forces with more than 500 volunteers to assist in the 18th Annual Ypsilanti P.R.I.D.E. Day. Members of the EMU women's basketball team and the coaching staff assisted in The American Heart Association Heart Walk, held at Washtenaw Community College.
Ypsilanti P.R.I.D.E. Day is a community-wide event intended to foster community pride and encourage local business growth by creating a clean and welcoming environment. It began as a class project by the 1995 graduating class of Leadership Ypsilanti; an experiential learning program sponsored by the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Regional Chamber, and is now sponsored by the A2Y Chamber Foundation.
Cleanup around the community took place from 9 a.m. to 12 pm. at more than 40 sites followed by a post-event celebration from 12-2 p.m. at North Bay Park.
This year PRIDE will partner with the Ann Arbor YMCA's Healthy Kids Day and the Judson Center to offer family entertainment at the Post-Event Celebration including field games and face painting. Live music was scheduled to be provided by local band Soultivity.
The Walk for the Heart event is held to raise awareness and funds for heart disease and stroke.
