Softball Suffers 2-0 Setback To Broncos

Eagles strand 10 on base and tally just three hits in the contest

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped a 2-0 decision to Western Michigan University at Varsity Field today, April 8. The loss moves the Eagles to 15-21 overall with a 4-4 mark in Mid-American Conference contests, while WMU improves to 17-12 (4-2 MAC).

EMU had plenty of opportunities to strike but could not find the key hits in the contest, as they registered just three and stranded 10 runners on base.

The Green and White had a chance to tie the ballgame in its final at bat in a one out, bases loaded situation, but WMU's Meredith Whitney managed to strike out the following two batters to preserve the win for her squad.

Despite suffering the loss, Lauren Wells (2-9) threw a solid 5.1 innings in the circle. The lefty struck out three and held the Broncos to just two runs.

For WMU, Becca Shemberger collected her fifth win of the year and shut out the Eagles while striking out eight.

Amanda Stanton doubled for the Green and White in a 1-for-3 effort this afternoon, while Katy Blaharski and Amanda Herron rounded out the Eagles' offensive efforts today with one hit apiece.

WMU's Whitney started the contest with a hit to right center field in the top of the first. Blaharski made an athletic effort to layout for the catch, but the ball was just out of reach and rolled the outfield fence, allowing Whitney to leg out a triple. Diana Patterson followed with a double to give Western an early 1-0 lead.

EMU came close to tying the ballgame in the third with bases loaded and one out, however the Broncos defense managed to turn a double play ball hit off the bat of Stanton to end the threat.

The Broncos posted its second run on three hits in the sixth. With runners at second and third, pinch hitter Emma Bogart connected on a ground ball up the middle to drive in a run and give her team a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Stanton chose an opportune moment to post her first hit of the contest. The junior shortstop drove the first pitch of her at bat to the right field fence for her third double of the season. Kaylee Tolliver entered the game to pinch hit and drew a walk, placing runners at first and second for EMU. Jessica Richards watched four straight pitches out of the strike zone to load the bases for Blaharski, but the junior's fly ball to left was not deep enough to bring in a run. With the tying run standing on second base, the Green and White offense could not muster up a hit, as the following two at bats resulted in strikeouts to give the Broncos a 2-0 win.

EMU will return to action Wednesday, April 11 at Michigan State. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
