Mike Talley to Join EMU Men's Basketball Program

Former Melvindale High School standout will be eligible to play in 2013-14 season

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Former Melvindale High School standout Mike Talley III has decided to return home and play for the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball program.

Talley has played the past two seasons at Duquesne University and will have two years of eligibility for the Eagles, starting with the 2013-14 season after sitting out the 2012-13 season per NCAA rules.

“I wanted to come home and find a good place where I can be a part of a program and do special things,” Talley said of his decision to transfer.  I just want to win and I see that the EMU program is on the rise. Coach (Rob) Murphy is there turning things around.  I have heard that he is a winner and everybody wants to play for a winner.  I want to help him get to where he wants to go.”

As a sophomore at Duquesne in 2011-12, Talley averaged 7.5 points and 1.9 assists in 20.6 minutes. His freshman year Talley started 27 of 32 games and averaged 6.9 points and 2.4 assists in 22.9 minutes.

“Mike brings leadership along with lots of playing experience to our backcourt,” Murphy said of the latest addition to the EMU program. “His skill level, work ethic and winning attitude will help him make an immediate impact on our program.”

The talented 5-foot-11 combo guard attended Melvindale ABT where he played for his father, Mike Talley Jr. He was a finalist for Michigan's 2010 Mr. Basketball Award in after averaging 31.2 points and 8.1 assists while leading Melvindale ABT to the 2009-10 Class C state title. In four years on the varsity squad at ABT Talley averaged more than 24 points per game.  He was named Class C Player of the Year by The Associated Press as a senior and was also named to The Detroit News Dream Team and was a first-team Class C All-State selection by the Detroit Free Press.

Talley attended Ypsilanti's West Middle School and his 8th grade basketball team went undefeated that season.

His father, Mike Jr., was named Michigan's Mr. Basketball in 1989. He won three consecutive Class A state championships as the point guard for Detroit Cooley High and went on to play at Michigan from 1990-93. His mother, Dana Talley, is an Ypsilanti High School graduate and his grandmother, Arbedella Brown, graduated from EMU.

In 2011-12, Murphy's inaugural season, the Eagles won the MAC West title for the first time in school history. Murphy was named the MAC Coach of the Year and NABC District 14 Coach of the Year.
