Eagles shutout by RedHawks and fall 8-0 in six innings
OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)— The Eastern Michigan University softball team allowed eight runs in a six-inning contest with Miami University in Oxford, Ohio this afternoon, April 21, falling to 5-10 in Mid-American Conference play and 19-27 overall. Miami improves to 27-16 on the year and 8-5 in MAC play.
The Eagles' bats were held scoreless in the contest and tallied just four hits on the day with Katy Blaharski leading EMU with two hits against the RedHawks. Amanda Herron and Jessica Richards concluded the Green and White's offensive showing with a hit apiece.
Lindsay Rich allowed two earned through 5.1 innings to fall to 5-9 on the year, while Lauren Wells tossed a third of an inning, allowing one earned run.
EMU's defense faltered three times today and resulted in five unearned runs. Two of those errors occurred in the first to help the RedHawks take a three-run lead over the Eagles. With two outs, Miami's Kayla Ledbetter sent a pitch over the left field fence to put her team up 3-0.
The Eagles put a runner in scoring position in the third after Richards reached on an infield single and Russ followed with a walk, but Richards would later be picked off stealing third with two outs to end the threat.
A five-run inning by Miami enforced the run-rule to end the game in the sixth. An RBI-double by MU's Casey Drees put her team up four, and Jordan McElroy's bases loaded triple sent her team ahead by seven. With a runner at third, Ashley Zappia ended the game with her single to third base to plate the eighth and final run of the ballgame.
EMU will get another shot at the RedHawks tomorrow afternoon in its final contest of the weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
