Ohrman extends hitting streak to 21 games
MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com)— The Eastern Michigan University baseball team fell, 8-4, Friday afternoon, April 20, in the first contest of a three-game set at Ball State University. The Cardinals (10-25; 5-8 MAC) used a seven-run fourth inning to hand the Eagles (17-20; 8-5 MAC) their first road loss since April 1.
Both teams exchanged single runs in the third inning before Ball State took a commanding 8-1 edge while sending 11 batters to the dish in the fourth. Eastern Michigan cut its deficit to 8-4 with a two scores in the fifth and one in the seventh, but left the bases loaded in the ninth.
Neil Butara (3-3) fell to 0-3 in road starts this season. The junior allowed eight runs and seven hits over four innings. Jordan Glover silenced the bats for the remaining four innings, allowing just one hit and recording a walk and a strikeout.
After an off day Wednesday, Brent Ohrman returned to the EMU lineup and went 1-for-3 with a team-best two RBI. Ohrman's hitting streak now stands at 21.
Sam Ott turned in a 3-for-4 performance with a double to push his hitting streak to nine games. The Canton, Mich. native also posted an RBI. Bo Kinder went 1-for-5 with a double and accounted for the other EMU RBI.
Brothers Tucker Rubino (2-for-5) and John Rubino (2-for-3) each recorded multi-hit games with John scoring a pair of runs.
For Ball State, starting pitcher T.J. Weir (2-6) won for just the second time this season. Weir gave up three runs and seven hits over six innings. Miles Moeller earned a three-inning save for the Cardinals.
Leadoff hitter Wes Winkle was the only Cardinals' hitter to register multiple hits at 2-for-4. Mitch Widau (1-for-4) recorded three RBI, while Weir (1-for-4) and Mitch Overley (1-for-3) had two apiece.
A passed ball with one out in the third inning advanced Rubino (John) to second base and gave EMU its first runner in scoring position of the contest. Ohrman singled to left field to plate Rubino and give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals tied the score in the bottom of that frame on a sacrifice fly by Widau. Butara stranded the go-ahead run at third when a groundout ended the inning.
Things fell apart for Butara in the fourth inning as BSU struck for seven runs and five hits to charge ahead, 8-1. Weir led off the inning with a homerun and Blake Beemer followed that up with a triple. Overley and Widau each plated two runs on ground balls which found their way through the right side. Sean Godfrey then doubled in a run and Weir capped off the scoring with his second RBI of the inning on a groundout.
Eastern Michigan looked poised for a big inning of its own in the fifth as Daniel Russell and Rubino (John) walked and Ben Magsig singled to load the bases with nobody out. Ohrman hit a sacrifice fly and Ott singled in a run to make it an 8-3 game. After Lee Longo was hit by a pitch to re-load the bags, Rubino (Tucker) lined into an unfortunate double play to thwart the rally.
Glover put on a clinic on the mound, sending the Cardinals down in order in the fifth and sixth innings. That performance left the opportunity open for EMU to mount a late-game comeback. Kinder brought the Eagles closer, 8-4, with an RBI double in the seventh. Ohrman scored on the play.
However, Moeller was effective enough for BSU to hold a potent Eagles' lineup off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game. The Green and White brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Matt Hitt struck out and Russell flied out to end the game.
The Eagles will try to even up the series Saturday, April 21, beginning at 1 p.m. Steve Weber (3-3) will toe the rubber for EMU and Chris Marangon (1-3) will go for BSU.
