Coquillard leads EMU with three hits, four RBI
TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University softball team snapped its six-game losing skid in Mid-American Conference contests with their 6-5 road victory over the University of Toledo today, April 15 to improve its overall record to 17-24 (5-7 MAC) on the year. The Rockets fall to 12-28 (5-7 MAC).
Nellie Coquillard paced the Eagles' offensive efforts this afternoon with her 3-for-3 day at the plate and drove in four of her team's six runs this afternoon.
Senior Jessica Richards also tallied three hits on the day. The speedy Canton, Ohio native also swiped two bases and scored twice for EMU.
Lindsay Rich started in the circle, but it would be Jenna Ignowski who would collect the win after 2.2 innings of work. Now 9-7 on the year, the junior held the Rockets to four hits and struck out three.
The Green and White would score four unanswered to start, plating one run in the opening frame and three in the third.
Richards connected on her first of three singles to lead things off in the first and stole second before Katy Blaharski could move her to third on a sacrifice bunt. With one out, Coquillard hit a sacrifice fly to center, bringing home Richards to give EMU a 1-0 lead.
In the third, Jenn Lucas and Richards strung together back-to-back singles to start, and Blaharski again successfully moved the runners over on a sacrifice bunt. Coquillard would increase the Eagles lead to four with one swing of the bat, connecting on her sixth longball of the season that soared over the fence in center field.
Toledo would find a rhythm offensively and score four runs through the following two innings of play to tie the contest at four.
A two-run sixth for the Eagles would provide enough support to get the Green and White through the remainder of the game. Amanda Herron led off the inning with a single to the shortstop and Courtney Loe moved her teammate to second with a sac bunt. Courtney Nicholson drew a two-out walk to bring Kaylee Tolliver to pinch hit for Lucas. The senior managed to put her squad back in the lead with a two-run double to left center field.
Toledo added a run in the bottom of the sixth, but that would be as close as the Rockets would get as the Green and White escaped with a 6-5 win.
EMU will return to action Tuesday, April 17 with a non-conference doubleheader at home with Detroit. First pitch of the first contest is slated for 3 p.m.
