Softball Improves To 3-1 In The MAC With Win Over KSU

Rich picks up the win; Herron and Richards record multi-hit performances

KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) —
The Eastern Michigan University softball team avenged its previous meeting with Kent State University with a 7-4 victory at the Diamond at Dix today, April 1, handing the Golden Flashes their first Mid-American Conference loss of the season.

The Eagles, now 14-18 overall and 3-1 in MAC contests, matched KSU's six hits, but the Green and White made the most of the home team's two errors in the contest that attributed to four unearned runs.

Amanda Herron drove in three in the contest in a 2-for-4 performance which included a homerun and a two-RBI double.

Jessica Richards also had a multiple-hit game, going 2-for-2 at the plate and scoring three times for the Eagles.

Lindsay Rich earned the win this afternoon in her third complete game effort of her young career. The freshman struck out five and held the Golden Flashes to four runs on six hits en route to improving her overall record in the circle to 4-6 this season.

Much like the previous meeting between the two squads, the Green and White were first to strike in the contest. Richards led off the game with a triple to right-center field. Katy Blaharski reached base in the following at bat, and an errant KSU throw that sailed into right field allowed baserunners to come around and score, giving EMU an early 2-0 lead.

Two defensive mistakes by the Green and White led to a KSU run in the bottom of the third, cutting their lead to one, but the Eagles recovered and added another three runs to their score in the following frame.

Another KSU mishap allowed Richards to score from second base and give the Eagles a 3-1 lead, but it would be Herron who would provide the offensive fire-power that inning. She saw a 2-2 offer from KSU's Danielle Abernathy and responded with a two-run shot to right-center field, scoring both McKenna Russ and Blaharski to give her squad a 5-1 advantage.

KSU chipped away in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI-double, but EMU would not relent offensively. The Eagles plated another run of their own in the fifth on Herron's fourth longball of the season before Blaharski's RBI-double gave the Green and White a 7-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

The Golden Flashes strung together two runs in the final frame in a last effort to scrape together a win, but the Green and White spoiled their attempts and came away with the 7-4 win this afternoon.

The Eagles will next take the field this Friday, April 6, when they host Northern Illinois for a pair of games in their home opener of the 2012 campaign. First pitch is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
