EMU and OU combine for 12 doubles
Box Score
ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)— A fast start by the Eastern Michigan University offense was nullified by an equally potent Ohio University lineup, which claimed a 10-9 victory in the series finale Sunday, April 1. The Eagles charged ahead early with four runs in the first, but the Bobcats erased that lead with five runs in the bottom of the inning and ultimately held EMU off for the win.
Eastern Michigan (10-17; 3-3 MAC) and Ohio (13-14; 3-3 MAC) combined to hit 12 doubles on the afternoon, with EMU accounting for five and OU the remaining seven. Matt Hitt's bases-loaded two bagger in the first cleared the bases and capped-off a four-run inning. Ian Mezlak and Dan Schmidt returned the favor in their opening at-bats to complete the Bobcats' five run frame.
The Green and White regained the lead in the following inning with two runs, but the Bobcats tied the score, 6-6, in the bottom of the second and pushed across three more run in the fourth for a 9-6 edge. Brent Ohrman then drove in the last of two runs in the fifth to pull EMU back to within one, 9-8. Douglas Holmes brought home the game-winning marker later that inning for the Bobcats.
Sunday's affair favored the offense from the first pitch, which spelled bad news for both teams' ERAs. Ryan Lavoie's bid for a third straight win was cut short when he was pulled after 1.1 innings in which he allowed six earned runs on five hits. For OU, Sean Kennedy departed after recording just two outs and giving up four runs (two earned) on a pair of hits and two walks.
Joe Battistelli (1-4) ended up as the losing pitcher, surrendering four earned runs on 10 hits in 4.1 innings of work. Marck Paliotto's (2-1) 2.1 innings of two-run, four-hit pitching was enough to earn him his second win of the season and Brett Barber notched his second save.
Ben Magsig smacked a pair of doubles and recorded two RBI in a 2-for-4 afternoon. Lee Longo and Austin Williams each posted multi-hit games as well, going 2-for-4. Williams also scored three times. Hitt's (1-for-5) lone hit of the day earned him a team-best three RBI.
Six Bobcats posted two-or-more knocks in Sunday's 16-hit performance including Jensen Painter (2-for-4), who belted his 11th round tripper of the season in the fourth inning. Ian Mezlak was 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.
The Eagles came out swinging in the first inning as Magsig led off the game with a double. Magsig made it home on a booted ground ball by the OU shortstop for the game's first run. Jamie Simpson drew a one-out walk later in the frame to load the bases. He was followed by Hitt, who tucked a line drive just inside the left field line to clear the bases and give EMU a 4-0 lead.
Ohio responded with an offensive display of its own in the bottom of the first with five runs on four hits which included three doubles. The Bobcats sent nine men to the plate before the third out was made to spring ahead, 5-4.
EMU did not trail for long as Sam Ott doubled in Brent Ohrman and Williams in the second to put EMU back in front, 6-5. A Jake Madsen double in the OU second knotted the score at six apiece.
Action quieted down until the bottom of the fourth, when Painter's two-run homer started off a three-run inning to give the Bobcats their second lead of the game, 9-6.
Bo Kinder joined the doubles club in the fifth and scored on a Magsig sacrifice fly. Williams also scored in the inning on an Ohrman infield single to make it a 9-8 game. Painter walked and came around to score on a Holmes single later in that inning to put OU back ahead by a pair, 10-8.
The EMU pitching staff held Ohio off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game, but the offense could muster only one more run on a Magsig double in the seventh inning. Barber sealed the game for Ohio by sending the Eagles down in order in the ninth.
The Eagles return to Oestrike Stadium for a weekday meeting with Michigan State University Wednesday, April 4. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
