Ignowski improves to 4-1 on the season; six Eagles register hits in the contest
Box Score.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University softball team wrapped up action at the 2012 Lipton Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. with a 5-0 win over Gardner-Webb this morning to improve to 4-11 on the young campaign.
Jenna Ignowski was the winning pitcher in the circle, completing 5.0 innings and holding the Runnin' Bulldogs scoreless in the contest. The righty hurler gave up just two hits and struck out one.
Lauren Wells entered late into the game in relief. She did not give up a single GWU hit in 2.0 innings of work.
Offensively, six members of the Green and White registered hits in the contest, with Amanda Herron and Allison Scherer each driving in two runs apiece in the contest.
After a quiet first inning, the Eagles' bats made some noise in the second. Scherer led off the inning and found herself just sixty feet from scoring EMU's first run after advancing to third on a GWU throwing error. Herron would not leave her stranded long, as the freshman connected on a 2-1 pitch to blast her first career round-tripper over the right-center field fence and give the Eagles an early 2-0 lead.
In the third inning, Jessica Richards led off the frame with a single up the middle. A bunt by Katy Blaharski flustered the GWU defense as an errant throw to first allowed Richards to score from first base. With one out and Blaharski standing on third, Scherer drove a deep fly ball to left, allowing Blaharski to tag up and give the Green and White a 4-0 lead.
Scherer would also drive in the Eagles fifth and final run of the ballgame in the fifth. Blaharski reached base after coaxing a walk, and Scherer then connected on a one-run double to right center field to close out the Eagles offensive attack.
EMU will be back in action, March 9-10, for the Lady Bison Classic in Nashville, Tenn. The Eagles will play four games, including host Lipscomb University, during the two-day event.
