Wake Forest offense too much for reeling EMU pitchers
Box Score.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (EMUEagles.com)— The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped the last of a four-game weekend stint Sunday, March 4, to Wake Forest University, 12-3. The Demon Deacons launched a 14-hit attack while holding the Eagles to just five base knocks.
Eastern Michigan (3-8) took an early lead with two runs in the third, but Wake Forest (8-4) scored at least one run in five of the final six innings to win its sixth straight game. The Eagles lost their third game in-a-row after opening the weekend with a win against Marshall University.
Bo Kinder and Brent Ohrman each had an RBI, with Ohrman also recording a pair of stolen bases. Jamie Simpson posted a strong 2-for-3 performance with two runs scored as the designated hitter.
Eagles' hitters worked Wake Forest pitchers for eight walks, but only one of those baserunners came around to score.
EMU starter Jordan Glover (0-1) lasted just three and one-thirds innings and was charged with six earned runs on seven hits despite pushing his season strikeout total to a team-leading 13 with five punchouts.
Chris Wilson (1-0) pitched five innings in a winning bid for the Demon Deacons and struck out five hitters. The Wake Forest staff was effectively wild Sunday, striking out nine EMU batters despite issuing eight walks.
The Demon Deacons received a six-RBI performance from Carlos Lopez, who went 2-for-4 with a bases-loaded double and a two-run homer. Leadoff hitter Pat Blair contributed a trio of RBI and drew three walks while scoring three times.
The Eagles were first to score for a third consecutive game when they put two runs on the board in the third inning. John Rubino led off the frame with a walk and scored on a Kinder groundout to second base. Simpson then crossed home plate on a passed ball.
Wake Forest made up its deficit quickly with three runs in the bottom of the third and five more in the fourth to take an 8-2 lead. Lopez notched a bases-clearing double with the sacks full in the third, and blasted a two-run homer in the fourth. Blair also hit a three-run round tripper in the fourth.
After the Demon Deacons increased their lead to 9-2 in the sixth, Ohrman hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Matt Hitt to cut the deficit back to six, 9-3. It would be the final run of the afternoon for the Eagles, as Wake Forest added two tallies in the seventh and one in the eighth.
The Eagles are back in action Friday-Sunday, March 9-11, when they travel to Tucson, Ariz. to battle nationally-ranked University of Arizona.
