Eagles Fall to Bobcats, 7-2

Ohio's five-run eighth inning evens series

Box Score

ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)—
The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a 7-2 decision to Ohio University Saturday afternoon, March 31, at Bob Wren Stadium. The Bobcats broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the seventh inning and put the game away with five in the eighth to even the weekend series at one apiece.

The Eagles (10-16; 3-2 MAC) scored first with a run in the opening inning, but Bobcats (12-14; 2-3 MAC) pitchers did not give up another run until the ninth. EMU baserunners were also picked off on two separate occasions.

A pitchers' duel between starters Neil Butara (2-2) and Jason Moulton (2-2) was the main theme of the game into the eighth inning. Butara departed after the first batter in the eighth reached on an error. Collin Taylor came on in relief, but recorded just one out in five attempts and ended up being charged with four earned runs.

Butara's final line was two runs, five hits, four strikeouts and three walks in seven-plus innings. Moulton scattered five hits in 6.1 innings of work and gave up one unearned run despite issuing four walks.

Ohio hurlers decided to pitch around EMU leadoff hitter Ben Magsig, who walked three times. Magsig was kept out of the hit column (0-for-2) and did register a run scored on the afternoon.

Sam Ott posted another strong outing at the dish going 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Tucker Rubino accounted for a pair of EMU's eight hits with a 2-for-3 afternoon and a run scored. Bo Kinder (1-for-4) and Jamie Simpson (1-for-4) were responsible for the Green and White's two RBI.

Ethan Newton and Cody Gaertner had the hot bats for Ohio, as both players went 2-for-4 with Newton notching a triple a game-best two RBI. EMU pitchers controlled Ohio slugger Jensen Painter, who was 0-for-3 with a walk.

Simpson drove in the game's first run in the first inning on a single. In the second, Brent Ohrman stole his 11th bag of the season and reached third base before being picked off by Moulton to end the scoring threat.

Butara preserved the one-run lead in the bottom of that inning as he stranded Jake Madsen—who led off with a double—at third base.

Ian Mezlak started off the Ohio fifth inning with a walk and came around to score with one out on a sacrifice fly by Newton to tie the game, 1-1.

Eastern Michigan was poised to regain the lead in the sixth as Ott roped a double down the right-field line to begin the inning. Ott advanced to third on a Lee Longo flyout, but did not score as Ohrman made the third out to shortstop.

In the seventh, Butara recorded two quick outs and looked to be cruising along until Newton legged out a three-base hit. With Tyler Wells batting, Butara threw wild an allowed Newton to cross home plate to give the Bobcats their first lead of the day, 2-1.

The situation turned ugly for EMU in the following inning as Taylor and Jeff Rousseau struggled to record outs. Both pitchers combined to allow five runs on four hits along with a pair of walks. The inning finally reached its conclusion when a relay from right field nabbed Newton at home plate.

EMU loaded the bases in the ninth with two out, but Rubino was the only runner to score on a Kinder single to make the final score 7-2 for the home team.

The rubber match of this three-game series is slated for Sunday afternoon, April 1, at 1 p.m.
