Eagles turn in strong effort in doubles against nationally ranked Nittany Lions
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) — Head Coach Ryan Ray's Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team ran into the No. 54 ranked Penn State University Nittany Lions here Saturday, March 17, and were shut out, 7-0, in a non-conference dual match.
The host team won the doubles point, taking all three matches, but the Eagles fought hard in all of them as the No. 1 team of Miriam Westerink and Nino Mebuke lost a 9-8 (8) decision to the Penn State duo of Petra Januskova and Chelsea Utting.
At No, 2 doubles, the EMU team of Mariya Toncheva and Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr dropped an 8-7 (5) match to PSU's Marie Bedard and Nina Sertic.
Eastern's No. 3 team of Daphne Friedrichs and Marcela Rivero lost, 8-4, to the Penn State duo of Sarah Henderson and Fernanda Perrotta.
After that exciting doubles play, the Eagles went on to drop all six singles.
“I was much more pleased with our efforts and performance today, compared to Friday's matches against West Virginia,” Ray said of his team's effort. “We had a strong opponent today, and we played closer to our potential. We just need to find more balance of results throughout the lineup.”
EMU falls to 4-10 on the season while Penn State improves to 9-3.
