Box Score.

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—The Eastern Michigan University baseball team jumped out to a 6-1 lead over Niagara University and never looked back in a 15-1 St. Patrick's Day slugfest here Saturday at Oestrike Stadium. Neil Butara and the Eagles' pitching staff were also sharp in the win, scattering just five hits while striking out 10.

Eleven different Eagles (5-12) recorded at least one hit in the game including Lee Longo, who continued his incredible series at the plate with another three hits to make him 8-for-9 in the series. The sophomore infielder is now batting close to .400 for the season and is now tied for the team lead in RBI with 11.

The Eagles have now won two straight decisions and have racked up 34 runs in their first pair of home games. The Green and White has also clinched its first series win of the 2012 campaign  The Purple Eagles' (7-9) usually potent batting order was all but silent Saturday, while the pitching staff allowed 18 EMU hits.

Sam Ott also had a three-hit afternoon (3-for-5) including a triple and a trio of RBI to give him 11 on the year. Jamie Simpson cracked the starting lineup for the fifth time this season as a left fielder, and went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer in the fifth inning and four RBI.

John Rubino had two late-game at-bats and went 2-for-2 including his first-career home run in the eighth inning.

On the mound, Butara (1-1) pitched six lights-out innings while picking up his first win of the season. Butara gave up one run and scattered three hits while striking out a career-high seven batters. Jordan Glover relieved Butara and tossed two scoreless innings. In the ninth, Taylor Dimmerling sent the Purple Eagles down without a hit.

EMU pitchers combined for a total of 10 strikeouts to tie a season-high.

Niagara's pitching staff was outmatched by the EMU offense for a second straight day as NU starter Jordan Schwartz (1-1) surrendered 10 earned runs on 10 hits in five innings of work.

Five different Niagara batters recorded a base knock and Wynton Bernard had the lone Purple Eagle RBI in the second inning.

The first three batters reached base for the Eagles to start the game including leadoff hitter Daniel Russell, who reached on a perfectly-placed bunt between third base and the mound. Brent Ohrman then doubled and Ott followed with a two-RBI single. Ott also scored on a Ben Magsig single and the Eagles led, 3-0.

Niagara got on the board in the top of the second on a Bernard double down the right field line to cut the EMU lead to 3-1.

Ott notched his third RBI of the contest in the second when he cranked a triple just a few feet short of home run distance. Russell and Longo also drove in runs to put the Eagles ahead by five, 6-1.

Longo singled to begin the fifth inning and Magsig and Matt Hitt each walked to load the bases with no outs. After Tucker Rubino drove a run on a sacrifice fly, Williams hit a three-run bomb to left-center field to increase the lead to 10-1.

In the top of the sixth, the Purple Eagles put runners on first and second with one out. Butara continued his mastery of the Niagara batting order, and induced a 4-6-3 double play off the bat of top NU slugger Ryan McCauley to end the inning.

Pinch hitting in the seventh, Kyle Klein hit safely for the first time this season and drove in a pair of runs. Both Rubino brothers also touched home plate in the inning to make it a 14-1 affair.

Rubino (John) capped off the scoring for EMU in the eighth with a solo blast which he tucked just inside the left field foul pole.

The final game of the series is slated for Sunday, March 18, at 1 p.m. Right hander Ryan Lavoie (0-1) will toe the rubber against lefty Jim Fort (1-0).
