Eagles Suffer A Pair Of Losses At Jacksonville

2/29/2012 9:44:00 PM | Softball

Miscues and a quiet offense attribute to two-game setbacks

Box Scores: Game One, Game Two.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (EMUEagles.com)
— The Eastern Michigan University softball team fell to 2-7 on the season after dropping two games this evening, Feb. 29, to Jacksonville University. The Eagles fell 2-0 in game one and suffered an 8-0 setback in the nightcap.

Despite being perfect defensively in their 2-0 loss, the Eagles collected just four hits in the contest and left eight runners on base.

Katy Blaharski scattered a team best two hits in four at bats this evening, while Sarah Gerber and Courtney Nicholson each tallied a hit apiece.

Lauren Wells took the loss and fell to 0-4 on the year after giving up two earned runs on five JU hits. The sophomore also struck out four JU batters in 6.0 innings of play.

Both teams remained scoreless until the fifth inning of play when the Dolphins plated a run to take a late 1-0 lead. The Eagles nearly tied the contest in the following frame. Gerber drove a single through the left side of the infield and Allison Scherer later reached on a JU error. With two outs, Nellie Coquillard was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Wells. The Lowell, Ind. native connected on a 1-2 pitch, but unfortunately for the Green and White, the line drive found its way into a JU glove to end the threat.

Jacksonville added an insurance run in the sixth inning to eventually escape with the 2-0 victory.

In game two, the Eagles only managed to record two hits in the 8-0 loss. EMU's defense continued to struggle as well, committing three errors that attributed to three unearned runs.

Scherer and Jenn Lucas were the lone members of the Green and White squad to contribute offensively.

Lindsay Rich (0-2) threw five innings in the loss, striking out three. The freshman gave up only two hits and did not allow a single earned run in the setback.

Much like the first game, neither team managed to plate runs early in the contest. JU took advantage of three EMU miscues to take a three-run lead in the fifth inning and added another five runs in the sixth to seal the win for the Dolphins.

The Eagles will return to action tomorrow, March 1, when they trek to Gainesville, Fla. for a single game slate with the No. 3 ranked Florida Gators. The contest is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
